I've been rubbish at blogging again this week, because I frankly thought nothing had happened. Then it turns out loads of brilliant things have been occurring and I've just not been noticing so there's a plethora of stuff to read about today that you probably already know. For my sake, just try and look a little bit surprised would you?! That would be lovely. I spent much of the weekend so far decorating the living room (not much, just a fresh coat of paint and some new knick-knacks, but it looks quite nice, n'est pas?) and getting Darren a "princess" chocolate easter egg to butch up his easter sunday tomorrow. So yes, happy easter "y'all" if that's your thing, though it will possibly be forever remembered as the weekend the new Doctor Who premiered...
- Mini Viva ~ One Touch: I may be the only person in the entire universe who preferred the original title of Do You Want A Candy! This makes absolutely no difference to the song at all. Although it's my least favourite of their three releases so far, it's still a positively stonking pop tune and part of me is just quite glad that they are still being given a chance at chart success after the inexplicable disaster (chart position-wise) that was the elegant & lovely I Wish. Wonder whether Alex Gardner will get the same bite of the cherry?
- Alex Gardner ~ One Shot: It seems that I'm Not Mad will not be troubling the upper echelons of the top 40 this coming Sunday. It's a bit of a shame really, as the song is quite pleasant if less mind-blowing each time I hear it. Still there is better on his album sampler and this week as part of his seemingly non stop nipple bearing publicity campaign, he whipped out (a nipple) a cover of JLS' One Shot in some nice garden somewhere. It's a bit faithful for more liking - would've preferred a more reigned in acoustic version, but still on the better than most level.
- Christina Aguilera ~ Not Myself Tonight: Let's bypass that hideous single artwork and get straight to the music shall we?! It took me a little while to become even remotely attached to this song, and I'm quite a big fan of Christina. I just couldn't remember a chorus after multiple listens which is never good. It's not a world changing track, but it's a fun club banger and once you "get it", it's actually quite a good comeback single choice for Christina. Looking forward to the video...
- Alanis Morrisette ~ I Remain: I've always quite liked Alanis. A lot. And i've always quite liked her contributions to movie soundtracks. Uninvited? Lovely. Still? Quite epic. Even that one from the Narnia movies was fairly decent. I Remain is taken from Prince of Persia and is a tune so evocative of incense that it practically pervades from your speakers as you listen. Firmly rooted in eastern influences, the more I listen the more I like... It's actually quite pretty, but obviously not as pretty as Jake Gyllenhall and his buffed up body :)

Back on Easter Monday with What Happened to 2004 part 2; Sergey (and Quentin & Christophe) album review on Tues (if I can get past the vocoder!!)...
Not feeling Christina at all. But I have to check out that Alanis song. I don't like to call myself a fan despite having the both Jagged Little Pill and Supposed Former... albums.
ReplyDeletehey happy easter to you too!
ReplyDeletenice sharing the #2 song with you too..next single is "Hearts Don't Lie" is soooo Kylie 2.0 !
I love your Mariah appreciation!
ReplyDeleteJust droppin by to say that I really love the Simon Curtis album, it took me roughly 2 weeks to appreciate 8bit Heart. Weeeee :D
ReplyDeleteI do get the Xtina song even though the opening kinda reminded of CB's Forever, no? And Alex FTW, I'm Not Mad is brilliant~
J - Christina is definitely a grower, but not one that will show up on my charts any time soon. I expect there will be much more magnificent stuff on the album... Heard Dirrty in a bar last night and it wasn't a patch on that!
ReplyDeleteA1 - I love Hearts Don't Lie. I suspect that will do very well for me too.
Mike - well she frustrates me sometimes, then she comes along with something like this that reminds me why I fell for her in the first place.
I'm finding Christina quite hard to get into too - not sure what it is about it. It lacks the instant feel of something like Dirrty or On A Mission or Bad Romance for example. Bittersweet, however, still at number one and deservedly so :) It's epic and fantastic!
ReplyDeletelook at that fancy salon!
ReplyDeletePaul, I'm so with you on the new Christina. When I read comments like "ON FIRE!", "EXPLOSIVE!", "HER BEST YET!" on blogs it makes me puke a little in my mouth. I like it. Don't love it and yes, after 30 listens I wouldn't be able to regurgitate the chorus back to you if my life counted on it still.
ReplyDeletere: Mariah...aww... I totally forgot about 100%. Did you see my finger in the audience!?!?
I'm sorry to see that Alex didn't do too well with the single, even though I haven't been feeling it. And if "I Wish" can't break the Top 40, how in the heck will "One Touch"? The Christina has finally won me over, though.
ReplyDeleteBen - well yeah Bittersweet poops all over the Christina song, but perhaps it will sound all encompassing and wonderful with a few remixes and a video?
ReplyDeleteChris - it's so show home :P We are not allowed to touch anything ;)
Will - it's certainly not her best. it's fun and does the job at probably introducing her again in the g'gah world but her best?! Nope... and yes i thought i recognised your finger ;)
John - the more i listen to alex the less i'm impressed. it's a decent song but perhaps not the sort of song to shake the world up... and definitely not first single material. I Wish was far superior and yes, i worry for one touch!
I could have lived with "I Want A Candy!" But I do love the track regardless. And I'm not into the X-Tina track yet. Admittedly, I have only listened like 2x.
ReplyDeleteBring on the Mini Viva album release - I really hope it does well for them! Same for Alex Gardner!
ReplyDeleteActually rather excited to hear Christina's new album, and of course the album!
Nice to see Gabriella Cilmi up so high as well!
Yuri - yeah the candy title now seems better than it originally did :) Christina is a bit frustrating but a definite grower...
ReplyDeleteAaron - I know, i'm a bit worried for the xenomania acts :/ Already the popjustice people are calling them xenofailure :( Clever but sad! LOVING Gabriella, the whole album is a delight!!
So Alex Gardner is in the top 20. Should be in the top 10. He is going to be big. Make his music more accessible to the USA. He is Better than Bieber ay far. And By the Way Where is ADAM LAMBERT he is amazing!!!! Super Star WOW
ReplyDeleteVince - well Alex's song has been floating around my chart for a while. I do really like it. I wish it had done better in the UK. Adam, I also like but i keep getting distracted from his album by other pop! I really should re-invest!
