Album Assessment: Christina Aguilera - Bionic

Oh dear. Poor Christina has taken a lot of flak over her fourth studio album "proper" Bionic, hasn't she? Perhaps coming out with two mediocre first singles (Not Myself Tonight and cunniling-awful WooHoo) and a massively bloated track listing has not helped. While Stripped remains her strongest effort for me to date, i whittled her Back To Basics project down to a rather good 11 track affair and have decided to do the same to Bionic.

Christina has always pitched herself as almost the anti-Britney - someone who grew out of the same teen princess mold but took greater control over her career; indeed Christina has currently released four studio albums and a greatest hits opposed to Britney's six studio albums and two greatest hits in the same time frame. Bionic should have been a perfect fusion of future pop, electro and r'n'b sounds while raising the bar in a world where apparently only Lady GaGa is seen as innovative and forward thinking. Instead, it was a rather patchy affair that lacked a cohesive vision - a real shame considering the strength of Christina's voice and the rather good imagery used for the campaign. However, there are some great tracks contained within the demonstrate what a great pop vocalist the world has in Ms Aguilera and how some editing could have created a much better set of tunes. Some careful marketing of singles would have leant itself to a much better campaign throughout 2010.

I can sort of see the reasoning behind Not Myself Tonight as the first single, but for me it didn't really work. Something that reminds of 'the voice' needed to be used - instead of trying to bend to trends just bypass them completely with something simple and powerful. I Am is the perfect track to do this. There is a vulnerability about the song that is incredibly sweet and lovely. The melody to the track is lovely and I can imagine an epic timeless video to accompany this - it's almost cinematic in it's feel. Follow this up with something completely different - Glam is a big Vogue-style tune that was rumoured to be the first single and it boggles me that it was bypassed. It sets a great zippy pace with a nice retro feel and the familiarity of the Daft Punk sample. Most enjoyable and a fun choice for single number two... Continue the theme of something fun and quirky for single 3, out in September-ish with the very good indeed Vanity. It has this punk-esque 80s vibe, some hilarious lyrics (though I cringe at times that they border on misogynistic!) and a great chorus. It has an almost tangible energy pumping through the song that creates a great vibe and a much wittier repartee than WooHoo never managed to achieve.

Christina would now be getting to the end of the album campaign and close to the Christmas market. If she could get a slot on the X Factor Live Results Show, a double-a side release of Lift Me Up/You Lost Me would be an excellent shot in the arm to the album. The former is classic Linda Perry - it has a rocktastic, guitar driven energy to it and sounds like it would be absolutely immensicles performed live, having the adoring fans waving lighters in the air and creating a massive risk of setting their hair on fire. The latter track is a raw, emotional ballad that is utterly mesmerising live (see American Idol finale) and a great addition to the Bionic cannon.

This creates a much better representation of sounds released as singles and some of the album's original bonus tracks are much better used as a cohesive set of tunes overall. My suggested tracklisting is below - I mean, what happened to the days when 9/10/11 tracks created a great pop album without the need for any padding. Quantity does not always equal quality, but at least in the iTunes era, the consumer has the power to create the album that they want. (for reference, see also Mel's review!)
  1. Bionic
  2. I Am
  3. All I Need
  4. Lift Me Up
  5. Glam
  6. Lost Me
  7. Birds of Prey
  8. Monday Morning
  9. Vanity

  1. I think you've hit it spot-on, mister.

I still cannot figure out why "Glam" wasn't the first single. It's not my favorite song on the album, but it works better as a single than "Not Myself Tonight." Personally, I despise "WooHoo," but I accept that I'm not the target audience for that track. It's aimed at kids who will find it titilating, and young girls who will find it oddly empowering.

I still adore Christina, and I think there are some gems to be found on this album. It's just hard-going to get to them. But it's worth the time.

  2. You are quite brave to wade through all that slop and pick out 9 tracks. I couldn't even get that far. I'm really not sure what she was thinking with this.

  3. Awesome review. I've still yet to warm to this though--Vanity's lyrics are really delusional wether you take them seriously or not ("Who ownes the throne?)" score a top 10 single and we'll talk.

  4. Larry - i'm puzzled by Glam not making single number one but oh well. In a perfect world it would at least be single number two... I do adore Christina still and am willing to continue with an edited version of a sloppy messy release (ew)...

Nick, well see above really - i guess i like christina enough to want to make the effort but outside these 9 tracks I won't be going back!!

J - indeed :) Well i doubt she'll get a top ten now unless later in the year she can get on the x factor and rerelease the album (or another botched together greatest hits!!)

  5. Totally agree Paul - spot on x

Prima Donna has reallly grown on me for a nice uptempo song. I absolutely love her ballads. This really is her bread and butter: I am, You Lost Me & Lift Me Up - all amazing! I'm also SO in love with Sex for Breakfast!! Bit graphic - but she sings sexy so well!!!!

For whatever reason this sound just doesnt seem to work for her. The electro vibe almost disguises her amazing gift: her voice. I feel like she trying a little to hard to be relevant and current....

I'm a massive fan of Christina but was a little disappointed with this effort. BRING ME BACK THE STRIPPED DAYS!!!

  6. Trying to salvage an album by redoing the tracklisting is admirable, and much too admirable for this rubbish. All this has gone a bit awry for X-Tina, hasn't it? I'd say Stripped was her most original work as an artist so far. I loved many of the tracks on Basics, but I am thoroughly turned off by the "new and improved" X-Tina. Next!

  7. I haven't listened to this album. No real intention of buying it. Maybe I'll pick up a track or two--everyone seems to love the Sia songs. Thank goodness we have the possibility to do what you did here and just pick the songs we like. The few things I've heard just haven't appealed, melodically, vocally, or lyrically.

  8. i know im in the minority here, but Not Myself Tonight is kickass!!
I love it , love it, love it ,its boistrious, volumeness and pure cheeky of the Madonna level, this single made me gaga for the album, which is going ok,but i still can't stop playing NMT, it's a "cult classic"!

  9. What a disaster this album has become. Poor singles that sound like knockoffs of her worst singles from the past after a campaign which hyped her collabs really killed it for me. Maybe I can find 8-9 tracks I like at a stretch, but there's a lot of self-love in the lyrics for a woman pushing 30. Seriously, she's a mom now--grow up. This could have been her Ray of Light moment, but will probably go down more as American Life.

  10. Great review, thanks! I have been a fan of hers forever, but haven't purchased this one b/c I was afraid of being disappointed.

  11. I haven't bought it yet, but I agree - if that american idol performance had been on Britain's Got Talent or X Factor, it would have propelled the track chartbound and perhaps resulted in better album sales. Perhaps she will retreat after this a la Kylie and X (I'm not comparing this to X but the fans didn't really love it as much as they could did they?) and could back with something as glorious as Aphrodite looks like it will be. She's down but not out...

  12. Firstly, Harsh! - Not Myself Tonight is absolute brilliance!

Quite exciting - I'm rather looking forward to it, and I think, as I've mentioned before - I'm all for Quantity, it's nice to get a lot of new material...:P

  13. Fantastic review! I agree, Bionic isn't very cohesive, and many of the tracks don't exactly project the futuristic pop tunes that the LP title implies. The single choices are awful and I was hoping we'd get a ballad instead of WooHoo as the second single. I abhor this track so much.

  14. Glad to see we're on the same page for the most part, except when it comes to "Vanity". I just can't do it. I just can't.

For a woman who insisted "Can't Hold Me Down", to be spouting bordering misogynistic lyrics just a few years later really rubs me the WRONG way. (Whoa, Xtina reference overload).

I do love the Sia and Linda Perry collabs, as you said. I think a double-A side would be amazing. I also really love "Elastic Love" and "Prima Donna" and "Sex for Breakfast."

But of course, everything I like never becomes singles anyway. ;)

  15. Michaela - i think i will have to revisit Sex For breakfast. That would still make it a workable album length for me :) I suspect that she could go away, rethink and come back with something natural and organic rather than so forced...

Yuri - i think the point is that there is some good stuff within the rubbish and had it not been so padded out with utter crap, it might have been a bit better received. it was never going to be a masterpiece but I do think it is a bit harshly judged...

PPG - well it isn't for everyone. but actually picking the album YOU (as in the consumer) wants to hear is one of the best things about the mp3 era!

A1 - you know since I wrote the review, i've wanted to listen to NMT a few times. Maybe I should have included that too!

Count ~ see I like American Life, and not so much Ray of Light, but i see what you are doing! really the whole way the album is perceived is an unmitigated marketing disaster so she will certainly have to have a think about it all...

S - well i think you will be disappointed, but we will have to see! Try the 9 tracks i selected or a few recommendations from the people commenting and see how you get on!

Ben - i like that - she's down but she's not out. I'd be sad to lose Christina from the pop scene. I do think BGT could have helped her an enormous amount actually...

Aaron - another vote for NMT! I look forward to a fabtasticmusic review of the album!!

Mad Katter - woohoo as a single choice is almost unforgiveable. What on earth were they thinking? Were they even thinking at all?!

Mel - well now i'm definitely revisiting Sex for Breakfast. Sorry you don't love Vanity. if it's any consolation, I can do the rap from Can't Hold Us Down for you in a british accent?
