Snap, Crackle (fizzy) Pop: Weekly catch-up July 4th 2010 ft Kylie flash mob! Plus Olly Murs, Samuel and Elan Lea...

Is it actually possible to literally suffer from exhaustion?! Because if so, I think I am. I have just had absolutely no energy the past few days - and not just in a tired way, but in a way where everything that I normally do takes a vast amount of effort, and then leaves me absolutely pooped all over again. (Despite all this I still managed to be co-erced into entering a mechanical bull riding competition at the local gay bar last night - and won. It's all in the thigh gripping!) So to cheer myself up I have regressed into a world of shiny, sunny pop (have I really regressed? Isn't that my world anyway?) and been watching things like the still brilliant Britannia High clip above. Which just proves two things - i) Matthew James Thomas could still be a magnifico pop star & ii) there is more energy and enthusiasm in that clip than anything in the "back 9" episodes of Glee. And there will be much more adoration of slightly outdated but current pop in tomorrow (ish) boyband post... But for now, some songs that caught my attention late this week...

Something for your Sunday:
  • Olly Murs ~ Please Don't Let Me Go: I actually really do like the new Olly Murs single. I think he had his moments on the X-Factor, but was often marred by a bad song choice. Getting the song choice right for his first single then was absolutely crucial and I think he happened to get this spot on. A shuffling reggae beat pitches him somewhere between Paolo Nutini and Jason Mraz, in an incredibly infectious and summery lilting tune. His vocal sounds quite nice and there is some entirely pleasing piano tinkling in the middle 8. Hopefully he has retained enough of his X-Factor fanbase that this will do quite well for him, especially as I hear he is working with Preston on his debut album (whose debut album I still desperately need to hear!) So ultimately quite surprising (as is nothing like the songs he performed on the show) but a pleasant addition to an increasingly good summer of 2010 pop soundtrack...
  • Samuel ~ I Heart NY: This has been floating around forever and a day (well at least a month or so) and I've only just gotten around to listening to it. My bad - this is quite a delightful tune filled with enough quirks and surprises to make it feel new and special, yet familiar enough that you feel you can sing along after just one listen. And it's definitely one of those songs that invites you in to it's created community with chanted vocal snippets, an engaging singalong chorus, enough attitude and swagger ("i was made to grow up and be famous/so i'm trying my best to stay shameless") to give it a real confidence and just completely wonderful from start to finish. It's definitely the anti-California Gurls (still shudder at that spelling) and all the better for it! You can buy the EP online here and listen to a mean cover of Ellie Goulding's Starry Eyed on his myspace here...
  • Elan Lea ~ Right Anyway: Two things to get out the way - firstly, there is no getting around the fact that young Elan is a bit of a looker. Secondly, I discovered his earnest charms thanks to my twitter buddy Pip, who got to interview him earlier this week. Elan is one of those people with gorgeously smooth vocals that can make anything they turn their voice to sound heavenly. This single is no exception - set over lush piano chords and some complementary drums, it gives the song some energy and charisma; a raw feel that really brings the tune alive. Sign up to his webpage and you also get a free download of another album track - the equally lovely Strangers For The Second Time. Definitely one to watch...

  1. Madrid looked amazing. Spain gets Kylie and fierce drag queens.

    London gets Urban Cookie Collective.

    Nice.

  2. Is it possible to suffer from exhaustion? Absolutely. My doctor has told me that is precisely what has happened to me... and have very similar symptoms! So rest, my little bunny, rest!

Loving the Olly Murs single. He was certainly a taste of beefcake on X-Factor, but never seemed to have the right song. This track is a surprise treat, indeed!

  3. I'm one for three with your offerings, but who would have thought it would be Olly! Are we keeping him around for more than his overly fitted trousers? Great song, although it doesn't scream megahit.

  4. Bobs - yeah there is something horribly wrong about that, but oh well what can we do. Other than live vicariously through youtube...

Larry - i think that's what i have them. Must stop riding mechanical bulls... The Olly song is surprisingly good, but it does match the weather...

John - one for three? Bah you! Go backto the other two and give them another whirl! one for three indeed :P

  5. Honestly I've never watched Britannia High but how briliant is "Watch This Space", I'm playing this song don't know infinity probably.
Olly's single makes me wonder why Lovestoned being international-level artists still can't break through, very nice song.

  8. "Watch This Space" is definitely my favorite Britannia High song. Though the second half of the Glee season was generally a disappointment compared to the first half, I did think "Dream On" was the exception.

The Samuel song has gotten a few spins from me while out and about and I'm hardly the first person to say it, but Olly's song reminds me that I still want Tyler James to come back :( That Preston news is unexpected and does definitely make me more interested in his album (and speaking of albums, yes, I really want to hear Preston's shelved one, too!).

Hope you get your energy back soon, and you should get extra bragging rights for still winning that competition despite everything!

  9. I actually miss Britannia high. there were some great pop songs in that show... Glee could actually learn a lesson or two from the energy in those songs!

Loving the new music - Olly Murs is a pleasant surprise, and nice that Preston is still creatively involved in the music biz. Really like the Samuel bloke - so catchy. reminds me of something that I can't quite put my finger on!

Oh and Kylie no longer number one? Her chart position here matches her "real" chart position. Nice to see Maroon 5 get their umpteenth number one with you though :)

  10. DAmian - watch this space is aces, i love Wake Up and Proud also! But Start of Something always makes me smile. And yes - i would love Lovestoned to become an international smash!!

Nikki - as i've said somewhere before, i had a whole second series of Britannia High plotted out in my head :) It would have been amazing ;P

Cass - yeah I am now officially in love with the maroon 5 song :) And Beat Drop continues to hang around because of it's amazingosity

PG - the most important things in your post were the reminders that Preston and Tyler James need to release all their unreleased tunes onto the interweb asap.

Ben - yeah, 7 weeks was enough for Kylie. She actually did herself in because i started playing lots from Aphrodite which diluted All The Lovers!!

  11. We have so much to talk about. I can only cope with all this in a numbered list.

    1. Olly Murs has a single out. I quite like it: pop-reggae was definitely a good choice.
    2. On the downside it sounds a bit late 90s and he's trying to be Will Young. And he's no Diana Vickers.
    3. On that note, why isn't Diana Vickers "The Boy Who Murdered Love" in your top songs? The song is epic?
    4. It at least deserves to be higher than the musical travesty at no.15.
    5. Is it a bizarre coincidence that I've been talking about Brittania High this week? I discovered a song from it was in my top 10 most played songs on itunes. After I got over the humiliation, I remembered it was actually a really funny show.

  13. Ahahahahahahahaha - Thanks for that - And Congratulations on such the Prestigious prize!!!

Britannia High??? - They are just purely amazing - And I honestly believe all of them (and all of I Dream & Glee & The Hairspray Movie Cast) - could make AMAZING music stars!!!

    Bring on Elan!

Kylie???? - Heard the album - AAAAARRRRRGGGHHHHH!!! - So AMAZING!!!!!

  14. Mark - numbered lists in the comments are probably a good thing as I do tend to waffle on. In short, a new Darin song called Lovekiller has appeared which pisses all over Diana Vickers (admittedly good) song... you should definitely youtube it...

Aaron - i'd be happy with albums from Matthew James Thomas (Jez), James Marsden and possibly the teacher from Glee but that's about it :)
