THE AUDIO:
This lovely track first came to light as part of gaydar radio's Secret Sunday sessions late last year and I am actually quite excited that Rod himself confirms that this is the lead single to accompany the forthcoming album. I'm not sure what this means for the previous tracks he's released, but either way (collection of previously released and new, or mostly new), it's all jolly exciting isn't it? (Yes, is the answer to that rhetorical question). The single is a prime example of what Rod does so well as his BLBL persona - taking influences from 90s piano house & rave (a genre he clearly loves), adding his own world-view emotive lyrics to the mix and creating an entirely engaging piece of music that seems totally relevant in the 2012 pop world. I love his use of piano in the song - stabbing piano chords can create a real dance vibe, and that's maximised from the intro right through the song (complemented by a percolicious disco beat that makes you want to grab the one you love and shimmy. Hard). Rod often examines modern day love in his songs and lyrically, it's an extension of what's been presented before. He's looking for someone to give him that butterfly in stomach feeling (except he's not as cliched as to say that) and the listener can't help but root for him as the euphoric choruses play. Quite magnificent - continued quality output bodes exceptionally well for potential album of the year...
THE VIDEO:
- A woman is clutching what I thought was an egg (I'm not sure whether Lady Gaga is inside it or not). However, it may be a rugby ball. I'm not particularly sporty so cannot confirm this (I can identify a shuttlecock from 20 paces though)...
- I think it is a rugby ball as there are lots of other sporty poses going on including some ridiculously handsome bloke if you pause at 5s...
- I am appreciating all this ball action...
- BLBL has arrived. I really like his hair. I'm getting me own barnet coiffed tomorrow so I may liberally borrow his style...
- As the verse starts, he's spinning around in a chair - he is either practicing his evil villain pose, or wishing he was a judge on The Voice so he could spin around whenever someone did DeLacey's Hideaway!
- There also seems to be some sort of gathering going on. The jocks are amassing, though they don't look particularly happy :( Perhaps they too are the visual representation of waiting for the feeling. Or the one of them has seen the dungarees he's wearing and is mightily depressed :D
- A manly hand starts playing around with Rod's head. I hope he doesn't mess up the hair because I've got to describe it to my hairdresser tomorrow (please god don't let me come out looking like Rob Thomas)
- Ball skills dominate the chorus. They are all very good. Especially the fella doing keepie-upsies. I was always rubbish at that, which is why I could never join the hackey sack community!
- The golden egg ball with Lady Gaga inside gets passed around in a rather sensual manner just as the second verse starts.
- Rod's hair is being molested again. I think this time it is an actual hairdresser, not an aggressive sexual predator like before. What I like about it is that it seems to be a style that is really hard to mess up! Does anyone else ever get an amazing hair cut and then can never replicate it at home??!
- There is a quite amazing pause at 2m03s. Also at 2m25s. I swear these were just random times I paused to type things up. Interspersed between these open mouth moments is some fella in orange doing some quite nice ball control dancing type manouevres...
- There is some more hair tussling, some more ball skills and now some socks all titillating their way through the middle 8. Then a pair of muscular legs pops up in front of Rod. I've never wanted to be a muscular pair of legs more...
- The Golden Egg with Lady Gaga inside gets a quick kiss from one of the ball dancing fellas. It's a fine romance, etc.
- You should all be aware that the Smoke Monster from Lost makes a very brief appearance in the final few seconds. He has a new purple outfit :) All in all visual goodness...
Figure of 8 ft Sophie Galpin ~ No One Cries For Me: I *believe* that this song was written by Mr Bright Lights and therefore is essential that you check it out. It's very of the BLBL "ilk" - a sumptuous piece of melancholic pop with some truly delightful layered harmonies in the chorus. It's very teardrops on the disco floor, with some accomplished synths creating a beautiful backdrop to Sophie's mesmerising voice. Utterly gorgeous. More please.
I'm in love again with brightlightx2.
ReplyDeleteI should have guessed you would do a video analysis for this one! Good stuff.
