Read my thoughts on Spencer's previous single Change Your Mind here

I wrote about Spencer last month when he released his entirely sparkling cover of Jason Donovan's Change Your Mind - part of his promotional activites to re-release an expanded version of his confirmed (by me) Very Good Indeed debut album What Have I Done. That release came in it's own limited edition tin with a plethora of effervescent remixes to get you shimmying like it's 1989 all over again (a very good pop vintage that year - click here for proof!) Not one to do these things by halves, Spencer has done it again - he teases the aforementioned re-release further with a second single, this time his cover of the Jason Donovan track She's In Love With You (b-side to his top ten hit Happy Together). The physical product not only contains seven dazzling new mixes of the song but also comes with a free pair of vintage 3D glasses - all in order to watch the You Tube premiere of his 3D video for his original composition The Quest For Pop (which I first wrote about here). It all makes buying physical music feel like fun again, like when you would run down to Woolworths to get the latest poster pack by New Kids On The Block or invest in a yellow vinyl Debbie Gibson Electric Youth album even though you already owned it twice. And that really sums up the ethos of Spencer the Pop Dude. He has this abiding, rightfully unashamed love for pop music - and celebrates those halcyon days of when the sound of Stock Aitken and Waterman ruled the charts. He's perfect for pop nostalgists like myself or for anyone who has ever danced to Steps Tragedy, S Club's Don't Stop Moving or Same Difference's All Roads Lead To Heaven at the office Christmas party (or - admit it - alone in your front room while getting ready to go out on a Saturday night). This is completely evident within the actual music - his voice has a real sense of the 80s about it and he imbues the lyrics with the right amount of wistful regret without it becoming too melancholy. The percolating backing track is a mid-tempo gem that keeps the song chugging along at a sprightly pace and provides Spencer with the right amount of oomph for his sweetly sincere take on the song. Jason's voice was a little more powerful and resonant, so Spencer's take has some added vulnerability to it that becomes quite charming. And whilst all of the remixes bring a certain sizzle to the song, it's the So Out There Christmas Mix that adds a festive disco element to the track that makes it a full on dance classic. Glorious. Now go and revel in it's magnificence :)
