If there's any justice in the world...
(then both of these songs would be rooted firmly in the upper echelons of the top ten during May)
Little Boots - New In Town: Sigh. Hasn't Little Boots happened yet? It seems she's been fannying around with this popstar malarky for blooming ages! And the hype that is as big as all outdoors can go either way - she could be as big as LaRoux (number one in midweeks for crying out gods sake!) or have a bit of a disappointment a la Frankmusic (which i have personally decided should still be celebrated. A top 40 hit is a top 40 hit!). I am hoping LB will be fairly massive - New In Town is an interesting choice for a first single 'proper'... It basically encapsulates the glory of the Little Boots sound and wraps it in a commercially edible electro pop tune that has a slight r'n'b tinge to it. However, it's no Stuck On Repeat, but hopefully the thinking is "win people over with this track and then knock their socks off with Stuck". Don't get me wrong, i am very enamoured with New In Town but it's more a Crazy than Baby One More Time (if that makes any sense at all). And lets face it, a quite good Little Boots song is still miles better than most crap out there :) Let the chart domination commence...
Kid British - Sunny Days: Unlike Little Boots, I have managed to resist the hype surrounding Kid British. That is until I heard this brilliant pop track that might just be the most glorious upbeat song I have heard since Britannia High's Start of Something (ooo i haven't listened to that this week, must rectify now!) It excels on so many levels - it's got a marvelously catchy chorus that is instantly as singalong as any pop act in the charts, yet has an aura of coolness about it (think Alphabeat). Mix this with it's rather downbeat rapped verses (full of deliciously british observations) and the second major song this year to feature beans on toast (Lily Allen - Chinese) and it has just totally won me over. I checked out their Leave London EP to see if it was a one off, but no - i was just as enchanted. Hurrah for summer songs!
And lets not forget: Annie's Anthonio just gets better with every single listen :)
Tomorrow: More new(ish) music from Del Marquis, Marina and The Diamonds, Click Five or someone else...
I love love love Little Boots.
ReplyDeleteKinda surprising, I was a little underwhelmed by Stuck On Repeat, i'm yet to get it's whole brilliance, but I'm open to the new song - and yes, a top 40 hit is a top 40 hit!
ReplyDeleteAnthonio is lush, for sure, Paulie. When will it be released in the UK?
ReplyDeleteI agree Little Boots should be as big as La Roux or even bigger. She's amazing and I just love "New In Town" unreservedly. Love, love, love.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, that Kid British song, I haven't had the chance to listen to it until now. It's quite growing on me.
Anthonio is a definite smash.
Robpop - i loved her, then got bored of her and now re-love her! With an increased passion from the previous love :)
ReplyDeleteAaron - Stuck On Repeat will win you over one day. I don't know when or where but you will fall to your knees when you finally appreciate it's brilliance. And yes, let's say well done vincent!
Yuri - i nearly called you Anthonio then! Oops. i'm not sure, PPG probably knows more than me! And she isn't even in England! EPIC FAIL on my part!
Ken - she is rather magnificent. Love her. And the kid british song is as equally annoying as it is amazing but the amazing side always wins out :)
"New In Town" is very, very good. My love for it grows every day. I really hope she does well and I can't wait to hear the final versions of the songs we've already heard, the rest of "Symmetry," and the songs we haven't heard at all yet (the good review of the RedOne song make me hope Boots will have actually got a fantastic song out of him for the first time in a while...well, by "while" I guess I mean a few months, but considering everyone and their brother is releasing RedOne songs at the moment, there's a lot we've heard from him in those months).
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to your thoughts on the "tomorrow" artists.
from the way the papers talk about little boots in hushed reverential tones, it does seem like she has already happened, so i hope New In Town launches her into the stratosphere. I love the acoustic version here... Kid British!! NEver heard of them! Love the chorus!!
ReplyDeletePPG - New In Town grows on me by the second as well. I am hoping she will be utterly massive and take over the world. Yes, RedOne is a bit ubiquitous at the moment isn't he?
ReplyDeleteBen - yeah, sometimes that level of hype puts me off, but i think it's justified with LB. And yay to Kid British. Though i am ever so slightly less enthusiastic about them today than i was a few days ago!
