Obsessions Update: Deborah Gibson/Simon Curtis

Deborah Gibson:

Ah, what I wouldn't have given to be in Quebec this very weekend. One of those 80s nostalgia tours rolled into town and this one featured booby Sam Fox, brillo S/A/W popstar Rick Astley, mall queen Tiffany and of course my beloved Deborah Gibson. I would have actually sat through a burst of 80s hits from any of those perky popstars - Sam performed (among other hits)her saw-tastic version of I Only Wanna Be With You and Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now; Rick got She Wants To Dance With Me, Never Gonna Give You Up and Whenever You Need Somebody (as well as the glorious post S/A/W Cry For Help); Tiffany did her staple of "girls aloud classic" I Think We're Alone Now, I Saw Him Standing There and lush ballad Could've Been (though i would have preferred the cornlicious I Always Thought I'd See You Again from the Jetsons, but oh well :P) and Deborah performed all 5 singles from her Out Of The Blue album along with Lost In Your Eyes and Electric Youth (Surely EY is ripe for cover/total reinterpretation by one of today's teen stars? Miley? Same Difference? Simon Curtis?! Dont let me down!!) Of course my main interest is in the Deborah performances - it was the first time she has performed her single Staying Together since the Out Of The Blue tour (i virtually made myself ill to enforce my mom to take me to London Astoria to see it in 1988. What a little shit i was back then :P) She also translated part of Foolish Beat into French which sounded quite lovely. And in a "on this day in history" moment, she played the piano for Tiffany while the latter sang Could've Been. Sigh. To top all of that off, all four performers did a joint performance encore of Together Forever by the Rickster. That song will just never die. And quite rightly so. I really should have flown over, but it's pricey and well, the Doctor Who special was on :P Hereis Tiffany and Deb sort of duetting from the night :) (All links are to performances from the night wherever possible)

Simon Curtis:

Meanwhile Simon Curtis has been enjoying his post Spectacular success by embracing all things twitter. He's keeping his thousand or so followers updated on his top secret auditions and teasing them tantalisingly with the promise of two brand new tracks he has recorded that are bound to be "da bomb" (or whatever it is the kids like to say to indicate that things are quite pleasing these days). On the plus side, his guest spot on Hannah Montanna airs on May 3rd (my birthday, date fans - it's the only reminder you are going to get so get posting those cards now :P) and there is an interview coming up (apparently) on the teentastic (and therefore daily necessity for me) Just Jared Jr. I'll link it as soon as it comes up. For the meantime, enjoy Simon singing something a bit out of his comfort zone above and prepare for the urge to watch episode after episode of the trashtacular One Tree Hill :)

PS - i am now on twitter. Not in a this blog is on twitter but more in a "ooo what did i have for breakfast sort of way". Thrilling. Feel perfectly free to entirely ignore :)

  1. Oh Paulie. Deb owes you for your devotion, she really does. She needs to ease up on the Fake bake though.

  2. Uhh! So wish I was there. I was going to fly out but the price of flights was a little steep :( I hope they'll tour in more major cities!

Rick has lost a notch or two in vocal range, but God, what a looker! Actually they all look pretty hot still! :p

  3. At the risk of getting smacked, was "Spectacular" a success?

  5. I'm not sure if I'm looking forward to or terrified by the idea of the popstars of my youth being able to do these nostalgia-style tours. Then again, nostalgia is pretty much what the Backstreet Boys have coasted through the last few albums on, so maybe it's kind of already happening... (though I guess if I'm going to analyze a joke comment seriously that's more "nostalgia that never went away but might be fading" than "revival"). Anyhow, "Together Forever" is great; I hope the international fame of "Never Gonna Give You Up" doesn't make it too jealous because it's just as good. I can't believe Deborah didn't offer to fly you out there ;)

Simon's going to be on that show? Hopefully that'll be good for him! What's he doing?

  6. XO - she really does doesn't she (owe me and need to ease up on the fake and bake). There is a picture of her on her home page in a horrible pink outfit that Dluv and Mike PTA would rip to shreds. I wish i had posted it now ;P

Will - I KNOW! That would be one amazing tour wouldn't it?! I would love to go :)

John - *smack* Yes Spectacular was a success. 3.5 mill on cable plus tivo's and plus one channel took it to nearly six mill, so decent figures and the album made billboard top 50. Hurrah i say, and celebrate the small successes.

Yuri - i am already bored with twitter you are indeed correct. lumme!

PPG - maybe in ten years time we'll all be off to see BSB, N Sync, Britney, Savage Garden and Christina in a nostalgia tour! Who knows?! And i think simon plays a blind date of Mileys or something. You MUST tune in :P

  7. I already bought my tickets to the britney tour in ten years.
I hear k-fed may be supporting, just to commemorate old times...

Frankly I think people go to see Madonna for nostalgia as well, (and PPG I agree about BSB) since (in my highly influential and relevant opinion) her most recent albums do not deserve to be supported

  8. No Apologies - well I have to say, i think Madonna should perhaps retire to Vegas and do a sort of revolving greatest hits concert there. I think that would suit her perfectly and be kinda massive. Especially if she had different sets that she alternated so you could book to see different shows if you desired...

  9. Rick Astley, Kim Wilde, and Brother Beyond are playing Wembley in May as part of the Here and Now Tour. I can't wait. Would have loved to see Debbie. Bought her every record since 1987, when I heard Shake Your Love, and still never seen her live (well I saw her in Grease and she signed my Body Mind soul CD, but not seen her singing her songs). But Sam sounded awful!

  10. Fernando - ooo that wembley concert sounds intruiging. I will have to look it up. Debbie is a treat live - i saw her in Grease too. She was proper bonza! I saw her in a little broadway on ice thing in Florida and she was very decent. Perhaps Debs will do more tours now. One hopes so.
