I think it was the sage XO who said on his post recently that it has been a rather magical year for music so far and I couldn't agree more. While I have probably found magic in different places to other people (could my obsession with the Benny Andersson Band song be any more entirely consuming), it's a joyous thing indeed when you actually feel you are neglecting albums on your mp3 player rather than struggling for something to listen to! And as it's Harry Potter day across the world (hurrah for the Half Blood Prince etc - see my twitter for Harry inspired songs!), I thought I'd have a bit of a magic day here. And what is more lovely to kick it off than this just edible choral version of Lily Allen's Chinese. I think it's one of the most lovely, twee, whimsical, delightful things I've heard since Second Best To None. And you can also download it free from their website. Heavenly.
3 Albums that are a magical listening experience:
There are many albums that I am loving this year and a fair few that I haven't written about thanks to my self imposed weekly blog update (poor Little Boots - such an ace piece of work that seems like it was made entirely for my pop tastes). There are albums that I love and feel quite happy listening to as a whole or popping in and out of whatever my preferred track is that day. And then there are albums that I feel have to be listened to as a whole to appreciate the whole majesty and splendour of the work - one song at a time just isn't enough. So their tracks may not feature on my top 21 weekly songs but overall they will probably end up quite high on my year end fave albums charts. Here are summaries of the best 3 so far...Florence and The Machine, Lungs: First of all, splash out for the deluxe edition. It's totally worth it just for the packaging and booklet alone. The music is poetic brilliance ranging from majestic anthems (Rabbit Heart) to spellbinding wonder (Blinding has stunning string arrangements and a pulsating pounding beat) to creatively challenging (Between Two Lungs is an astounding creation of sounds and lyrics). XO and Adem love her :)
VV Brown, Travelling Like The Light: She's not exactly another Amy/Duffy/Pixie wannabe, possibly because she's mixing a more 50s inspired doo-wop sound with light and airy guitars and melodies that are timeless whenever you listen to them. Her tunes are as much Puppini Sisters as they are Alesha Dixon. Shame that the hype is putting some people off (it did me at first - pop icon?!), because delve in and the whole album is ever so delightful.
Charlie Winston, Hobo: Lovely Charlie gets a musical tick for being the brother of quite charming Tom Baxter. Hobo is probably the album I expected Paolo Nutini to make but didn't. A hint of blues and soul music run throughout the album, which ultimately plays like an extended love letter to love. Sometimes the songs are exuberant, sometimes melancholic but always a joy to listen to - check out his acoustic session from BBC radio. Lyrics and melody floating around and woven together by Charlie's distinctive voice. Elegant.
Plus the Sally Shapiro songs are quite nice (Love In July; Miracle)!
Plus part two! James Leon has put his video for Purple Heart on his own youtube site. Bonza!
Plus part three! New Industry single available for preview at Chartrigger! Wizard!!
Loving Purple Heart. Obv!
ReplyDeleteAnd VV Brown is fabulosa. She's knocking my Bobby socks off!
I'm pleased with the choir version of "Chinese". Brillo.
ReplyDeleteFlorence's album has been one of my favourites so far this year and I'm finally going to review the album once I get all of my frustrations out this week.
LOL. The album is just pure epic.
VV Brown's "TLTL" hasn't grown on me for the past few days. But I'm persistent on liking it.
RE: VV - didn't PJ have a snip from a paper heralding her as a "pop icon"? That's a bit much, but I do like Shark in the Water. If there are doo-wops on the album, then I need to take a listen. :)
ReplyDeletePhil - well obviously. Who wouldn't?! I've had VV on repeat non stop all day. Once i'd stop playing Florence, the choral Chinese and of course Story Of A Heart. So i guess i listened twice :P But still....
ReplyDeleteKen - it's the faces of the girls and guys in the vid, they look so thrilled to be singing it. that little lad has a lovely voice. Makes it all rather amazing. Florence is epic isn't she? Stick with VV Brown - you may learn to love her. So much better than Pixie Lott!!
Yuri - Yeah, and of course PJ was having a pop more at the paper that did that rather than VV. The album is quite lovely indeed. Any of these artists are better than trying to sit through the shrill torture of La Poux again. So don't call the pop doctor just yet, i'm fine as I am :P
hey
ReplyDeletei adore this track, a perfect christmas single for Lily imo...these kids do a great job, so sweet and blissful..thanks for the post!

I guess, when you put it in perspective - This year has been pretty good!
ReplyDeleteKinda beyond belief that you've not written about Little Boots yet (I'm surprised! I thought you had!) and reeling from the new release schedule on auspOp - LOTS OF STUFF! - AMAZED that Britney is releasing a new collection - How she can get a multi-disc edition is beyond me, but welcome!
Somehow when I saw Lily Allen link to that video on her web page, I instinctively knew that you would be in love with it. And quite rightly so. It's rather gorgeous isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI can only order the Charlie Winston album from France and ma francais isn't ne pas good enough to do that :( But I am liking Florence a fair bit. It's ever so brilliant from start to finish.
Hurrah James, Sally and Industry!
A1 - yeah i would love Lily to rerecord it with the choir for a christmas release/ It would actually make for a rather off kilter children in need charity single methinks...
ReplyDeleteAaron - i just feel the ship has sailed on my little boots article!! I will probably devote a fair amount of time to her soon - i've written about her in the past and she's featured on my weekly chart. Just not done the album review. And lazy Britney - another greatest hits only 2 albums after the last one. What is she? Hilary Duff?!
Ben ~ Well you know me well. Of course i love the Lily track. It's adorable. And you should brush up on your french and order the Charlie album. it's vehr gut.
(and Hurrah indeed)
Everyone's going on about Sally Shapiro's new single. Must check it.
ReplyDeleteI am so in love with that choral version of "Chinese" ... it's possible that I listen to it more than the original:p
I had written off Florence and the Machine, but perhaps I'll give her a second chance, since you like the album so much. Sweet "Chinese" video.
ReplyDeleteWill - it's quite good. Both Miracle and Love in July. Which i think is a brilliant title for a song :) And i'm with you on the choral version of Chinese. Just delishio.
ReplyDeleteADH - ooo i feel under pressure now for you to find it entirely amazing and wonderful. I hope you do (bites nails nervously!)
