In case you didn't know, I bloody love Maroon 5. love love love. I think the rather handsome and heavenly Adam Levine (or Adam LeFine as I call him) has a distinctive vocal and makes a great front man; more importantly, I think the band gel together incredibly well and have produced two most enjoyable and rewarding albums. I got to
interview Adam (thanks to D'Luv) back in 2007 for the release of It Won't Be Soon Before Long and then met the band backstage at a soundcheck to an incredible concert in late 2007 with ruthiepoos (god I looked enormous). I've seen them numerous times live, written about them far too much and continue to play their albums fairly regularly when I'm looking for something familiar to cheer me up. They have proliferated my charts
(Songs About Jane = Harder To Breathe #1; This Love #1; She Will Be Loved #2 Must Get Out #2 Sweetest Goodbye #3; It Won't Be Soon Before Long = Makes Me Wonder #1; Wake Up Call # 1; Won't Go Home Without You #2; Goodnight Goodnight #8; If I Never See Your Face #1) and provided me with many an entertaining video. Hurrah then, that I woke up this morning to find their new single Misery is available and has already proved to be a very good start to my week (screw this longest day malarky!!)
Misery ~ what a delightful musical treat - equally as delightful as the visual treat I just found online above! It's on itunes already, so you can click the song title to be taken straight there to purchase it. Let's start with the
artwork - it reminds me very much of the colours and style of the Hitchcock '
Vertigo' poster, and perhaps more on that theme will be reflected in the video (which is apparently more violence than sex based). The song itself doesn't stray too far from the band's signature theme - it has a lot in common with This Love and Makes Me Wonder. It's a funky bassline with poppy instrumentation yet decidedly downbeat lyrics as Adam ponders the decay of yet another relationship. The chorus is deliriously catchy and clever couplets abound through the song ("So scared of breaking it but you won't let it bend/and I wrote 200 letters I won't ever send") that makes the tune 'dear diary' pop that everyone and anyone can relate to. As with any Maroon 5 lead off single, it's probably not entirely indicative of everything on the album as they usually mine a number of different styles and influences. This, initially, makes me very excited for Hands All Over and frankly September can't come soon enough...
Back tomorrow with Moto Boy and more Christophe Willem :)
you do not look enormous! What are you talking about? Loving the outfit. great song too from Maroon 5 - nothing particularly groundbreaking, just solid enjoyable funky pop. Nothing wrong with that either. it's oddly comforting to have them back!
ReplyDeleteFirstly, What longest day? Hehe.. :)
ReplyDeleteAs for Maroon 5 - LOVING them, and I'm super excited for this one - But personally, I'm disappointed Not Falling Apart and didn't turn up on your lists?
Great article Paul! I too have been a fan of M5 these last 7 years and look forward to new stuff! They've also proliferated my chart below:
ReplyDeleteHARDER TO BREATHE #6
THIS LOVE #1
SHE WILL BE LOVED #2
TANGLED #14
SUNDAY MORNING #10

MAKES ME WONDER #1
WAKE UP CALL #8

OMFG. I love Maroon 5 too! LOL.
ReplyDeletePaul, I'm effin jealous with that photo =.="
BTW Misery is pretty cool, not too drastically different but still oh so good :) Can't wait for Hands All Over!
Oh God. The first time I heard this song, I was like WOW. It's insanely good! So glad they're back and I'm gonna die if this won't become a hit! Can we fast forward to September please?
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a proper Maroon 5 single! Bring on September!
ReplyDeleteHow nice that they keep their direction, I actually like most of stuff that Maroon 5 releases but after listening Misery I feel like I can re-understand their music, like I've been missing something before in a whole picture.
ReplyDeleteObsessed. It's going to be playing in my car all summer. I've been trying to figure out how to describe it, and the songs I keep coming back to are the ones you mentioned (plus maybe a little "If I Never See Your Face Again"), but it's like it's a poppier or lighter version of those, maybe...less scuzzy, more polished. Not that it needed to be that, but it works.
ReplyDeleteI know I keep saying this, but Mutt Lange's involvement really has me excited. Two great tastes that taste great together, hopefully!
(Also, ditto Ben's first commenet.)
Summer, thy name is "Misery". Love it!
ReplyDeleteAMAZEBALLS!! Loving this tune! Thank god for the return of Maroon 5 - they've been missed! I personally have missed adam levine's face!!! ;) Great review Paul - spot on as usual! xxx
ReplyDeletePaul, you look fab. You've totally stolen Adam's shine in that pic!
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, Maroon 5 never really did it for me but I'll give it a whirl for you!
Ben - the camera must have added ten lbs or so :P It IS nice to have them back isn't it?!
ReplyDeleteAaron - well just because Not Falling Apart didn't make the list didn't mean i didn't love it and listen to it lots. Ditto bend and break :) Actually pretty much everything was played to death by me at some point :)
Bill - yay! It's exciting to have them back isn't it?!
RC - yes, it's a good comeback that reminds the world of what they are. I fully expect more diversity on the album and am confident will get it!
Ken - i would love to fast forward to september! No more hayfever :P
Katrina - another vote for September! Let's time travel! Plus it means I would also know the kylie album back to front and inside out by then so that's good!
Damian - it's very pop isn't it and very them. Can't wait for the video!!
Poster Girl - what i really like is that the first time anyone could hear it was by purchasing it on iTunes. not a radio rip, not a 30 second clip but just going out and buying it!!
John - Misery. Love it. Something so wrong yet so right about that sentence!!
Michaela - amazeballs indeed :) How jaunty it is :P
Mike - i knew I stole his shine :P I hope he doesn't want it back ;)
maroon 5 is awesome
