Snap, Crackle (Fizzy) Pop: Weekly Catch Up 27th June 2010 ft Kylie & Scissor Sisters, Didrik Solli-Tangen, Tom Stereo, Ollie Wride & Darin

What an entirely pleasant weekend it has been. This is clearly a nice change from me moaning about how busy/tired/moody I am, so grab it with both hands and run with it I say. Something called Aphrodite has brightened the world this weekend (it's the spiritual successor to Light Years and a general love letter to pop), and everything else good seems to a glow a little brighter because of it - Scissor Sisters live, a nice Starbucks, Shrek Forever After at the Imax (so pricey!), Chinese meal with the Ace Gang, No-van being evicted on Big Brother (Scabby and K-evil next please), the last Doctor Who episode before Christmas (wrapped up a good year nicely - something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue = silly genius!) and now a nice lazy Sunday. Plus of course the giddy thrill of the lovely Kylie duetting with the Scissters on my current fave from their Night Work album at Glastonbury (above). Even just watching the video and hearing the crowd roar at about 35 seconds gives me huge goosebumps. It's a giddy, glorious pop treat. Heaven.

Magnifico new pop for the remainder of your weekend:

  • Didrik Solli-Tangen ~ My Heart Is Yours: I've been meaning to write about this for forever and a day (or at least since Eurovision). Basically Simon Cowell can stop looking for either the next X Factor winner's song or a brillo massive Westlife single because the exquisitely charming Didrik has delivered an elegant, crescendo-ing moment of pop regalness that continues to grow into it's massive and spine tingling finale. Utterly glorious, and lovely Didrik has a rather entertaining blog where he documents nearly every moment of his life with pics and diary entries. Oh and if the above is a bit too pomp and circumstance for you, there are some brilliant dance mixes floating around too...
  • Tom Stereo ~ Number One: It's thanks to Scandipop that I've picked up on the latest boy-pop obsession from Sweden. His latest single is a pulsating disco affair that brings the sunshine from outside into wherever you are. Great catchy chorus reminiscent of the great S/A/W days of music, but with a more up to date sound. And if that wasn't pleasing enough, there is a fun key change to spice things up for the final couple of chorus renditions. Brillo and can't wait to hear more...Plus any video montage that starts off as hornily as the above link does it a-ok with me :)
  • Ollie Wride ~ Headrush: This one is thanks to Poster Girl who it is entirely fair to say, has become a tad obsessed with young Ollie. There is definitely something about his music that straddles glam rock, electro-synth, the theatricality of the best McFly songs (think Transylvania) and yet is still firmly rooted in pop sensibilities. And that vocal - something really special could come from this guy; at around 2 minutes into Headrush he delivers a gorgeous, flawless vocal which just sends shivers. He certainly knows how to deliver catchy tunes, but there is something more about him that places him above your average generic boy-pop star. Check out his video for an incessantly addictive tune called Pop Music below - it's raw and unrefined and yet...I can't quite put my finger on it, but I just feel amazing things are coming from Ollie Wride :)

  1. What a thrill to watch that performance of Kylie and the Scissors. Terrific. Loving that Darin clip/song, too. So simple and sweet.

  2. A "love letter to pop"--I love that turn of phrase. Sums it all up perfectly.

How much fun is that Scissters/Kylie performance?! I would have loved to have been there for that. "Any Which Way" is currently probably running around third/fourth on my list of favorites from that album. The middle eight = amazing.

Speaking of Doctor Who, I'm glad BBC America isn't MONTHS behind in running the episodes. A few weeks, but nothing I can't deal with.

The Didrik dance mixes are welcome. Oh, boy--now that you say it, yes, that is clearly what the original is destined to be used for.

Aww and woo at the last song to feature on your list above! x10! :D I hope he gets to where you get the sense he could go...if that makes any sense.

How is it possible that "All The Lovers," which was already potential-single-of-the-year sort of amazing, seems even MORE amazing in the context of the album? Still giddy!

  3. That was a nice performance with Kylie. I'm short sighted so I couldn't really see the TV properly and I was thinking "That can't be really Kylie could it?" Yay for 7 weeks atop your chart. I wanna know just how UNCONTROLLABLY EXCITED you are to see your favorite pop single of all time make it 7 weeks atop mine? Pretty exited huh? ;)

  4. Larry - i knew you would love the Scisster-Kylie hook up. So much fun. i love when Jake and Kylie are shimmying along to Ana Matronic's middle 8 filth :)

PG - it definitely is a love letter to pop. i dug out Light Years this weekend and have had both on a loop; they work really well together. Re: Kylie/Scissters - it worked so well, though i really have to stop walking around quoting the middle 8. i think it could get me into trouble!! Hopefully you'll report back when you have seen the Doctor Who eps 12/13 - they really were quite good/mind bending... Ollie Wride, I really like - i'll have to compare longer notes with you at some point :)

J - well I am starting to come around to California Gurls, though i will never like the spelling :)

  5. Didrik seems really lovely, which goes nicely with the looks :P - Thanks for the link - I'll have to find some of those dance mixes!

As for Kylie - AARGH!! - I did actually have my fingers crossed Aphrodite (not having heard it) would be more Light Years, so that's come true! - Great stuff!!!

  6. Aaron - Didrik does seem rather charming and yes, quite the handsome fella! And Aphrodite is definitely as amazing as Light Years!

  7. The finale for Doctor Who? Brilliant. Kylie and the Scissters? Brilliant. Didrik? Not too shabby. That remix so reminds me of another one. Maybe "Unbreak My Heart"?

  8. John - yay, glad you liked the Dr Who finale :) It was a bit mind bending and bonkers but so very entertaining and an amazing set up for next year. Didrik - yes, it's very reminiscent of Unbreak My Heart the dance remix!!

  9. God, i'm very behind on my daily bread aren't I?! Everyone was buzzing about Kylie and the Scissters - it was an incredible performance.

I'd quite like to see that Didrik song as the westlife comeback song. It would certainly guarantee them a rather large number one...

LOVE OLLIE. read about him somewhere else too. he's rather brilliant...

  11. I hope Fredrik Kempe will write some new stuff for Didrik like he usually does for his Melodifestivalen artists and I hope it will be something not weeker than Malena's album. I'm so thankful to Didrik for giving me that song this Spring I don't even care at all about its results on ESC, I'm just happy it was in my life.
Tom Stereo has very nice Summer pop-anthem, Scandinavia should give more such great pop-pieces, I extremely need something in this key from some of Swedish disco-Gods.

  12. Ben - wait! It sounds like you were at glastonbury? Is that an accurate assumption?! I need more details if so :)

ADH - i know! They should release it as the second single and have it featuring Kylie :)

Damian - i really like Didrik's voice so would like to hear an album from him. Tom Stereo's song is major pop candy. I need more!
