Single Selection: Take That ~ The Flood (& weekly charts)

It's essentially been a mega week for pop (new P!nk!) - but especially for boybands. There's the return of Big Time Rush. A sizzlingly seductive new McFly song. An inspiring and soaring number from Westlife. JLS have charmed with their children in need snogathon Love You More. And Robbie battled for number one with his still very charming Gary duet Shame (and the equally aces Heart & I on his greatest hits is a belter). However, the best was saved for the end of the week - and lead a huge influx of boy band songs into my hot 21 songs of the week...

TAKE THAT ~ THE FLOOD:

Crikey. Stuart Price's involvement with the new Take That album has elevated their already considerable talents to an all new level. It's true that the track is "flooded" with Robbie's vocal (yes, we get it, he's back), but it's a tremendous tune that I keep returning to over and over again. Lyrically, it's a bit like Shame in the way that it addresses what has personally happened within the group over the past 15 years or so and the chorus is so unified and soaring that it gives it an almost celebratory feel. Crashing drums, strings and solid harmonies propel the track to greatness and I think I am only going to be more excited when the video drops on Friday 15th...

  1. Th Flood deserves to be the biggest international hit of both Take That and Robbie for years. Though Greatest Day and Patience were significant moments in my pop-history. But it's something completely new. Like boyband of new generation, massive, epic and complicated (it's the only thing that can not to let it hit the world quite fast).

Very beautiful video from Brandon. He creates his own unique style and image, it's breathing with something familiar and very beloved from 80-90s. Love this mood!

  2. I really really love it. I can see why you are obsessed with it. It is one of those songs that actually does get better with each listen. Youtube are doing a good job of snatching off the radio rips but perhaps that is what damaged Grobbie's chances today of a top spot on the chart?

Love the boyband new entries on your chart!

  4. DAmian - it's magnifico isn't it? It does remind me a bit of Fire With Fire at the beginning and I was worried Stuart Price had stretched himself a bit thin this year but that's not the case.

Ben ~ well hopefully i think this will be the more massive cultural moment for the Grobbie reunion, though i think the sales figures are very good for Shame as it is...

Tara ~ i am loving them something rotten at the moment :)

  5. There's so many new singles from big artists coming out in the few weeks--it's making my head explode. "The Flood" sounds awesome. Their Nov. 8 faceoff with JLS should be fun chartwatching.
