- Luke Leighfield ~ Garde Ta Foy: Trust Luke Leighfield, whose music I am already smitten with, to come up with something so enchanting, mesmerising and beautiful and yet make it all seem so effortless. His first track from new album (New Season due this year) is a piano driven, emotive tour de force. The first four lines of lyrics alone are a devstating emotional gut punch, exquisitely delivered with a hint of sadness but most importantly with a tinge of optimism. Luke's voice blends perfectly with the delicate piano line, like a brook laconically running over perfect polished pebbles and is nothing less than hypnotic. It quietly and elegantly builds the optimism, the 'firework display' until the refrain of "are you ready for a new season?" explodes into a cavalcade of guitars, synths and drums that lend to the swell of emotion you feel in line with the song. It's an epic song that deserves massive success. Utterly delightful. And do check out the video that goes with it above. Simply brilliant.
- Jon Spanyol ~ Ignorance Is Bliss: I am a bit behind with writing about the wonderful Jon Spanyol, but surely this will make up for it. Ignorance is Bliss is from Jon's album Pick A Card (which by the way is very good indeed and made for a Vegas residency) and is a jaunty number set over punchy chords with a theme of just accepting yourself for who you are. The chorus is a quirky delight and there are some heavenly piano riffs interspersed throughout the song. It crescendos into a rousing rollicking horny good time - you'll find yourself singing along and fingerclicking with a massive smile on your face. And let's face it - sometimes that is what music is all about...
- Capital Cities ~ Holiday: One can't beat a celebratory cover version of the already joyous Madonna classic to ring in the new year. Capital Cities (of the excellent track Safe and Sound fame) have done just that with a version that is reverent enough that it keeps all the bits you loved about the original (such as the glorious spinning synths at the start and that playful baseline) yet added enough of their own charm to make it indelibly Capital Cities. It's a knowing tip of the hat to the still queen of pop, yet a delightful introduction to one of the most charming additions to pop in the past couple of years. Love the absolutely bonkers ending too :) More please Mr and Mr Capital Cities :) More!
- Jason Mraz ~ I Won't Give Up: It's not secret that I love most everything that Mr A-Z touches and the follow up to the inspirational World As I See It is no exception. I Won't Give Up effortlessly slides to the top of my playlist this week and is a somewhat heartbreaking tune about a failed relationship. It's ever so delicately delivered over a whispering backing track and an earnest yet powerful vocal from the man himself. It builds into a celebration of what made the relationship (and Jason) so successful and why this love is so worth fighting for. The addition of backing vocalists towards the end of the track is a giddy treat that give it a theatrical feel. Be prepared to hear much much more of this track everywhere in 2012. And deservedly so...
