The Overtones - Say What I Feel (video)

As Magnus Carlsson so ably said in his Wrap Myself in Paper song, "it's Christmas in a week and a day"! Hurrah! I only get to say that with any legitimacy once a year :) And as an early Christmas gift, those fine fellas known collectively as The Overtones have foisted two splendiferous videos on the tube known as you for your viewing and visualisation pleasures. The first, as you can see above, is an impromptu performance of Adele's Rumour Has It mashed together with the song that just won't quit, Moves Like Jagger. There are several things I like about this performance - in fact so many that i'm going to need bullet points to list them all!
  • It's a proper mash up not just a medley (which often confuses Glee and X Factor music people). The two songs weave around each other both in the melodies, harmonies and backing riffs. It's quite, quite tremendous.
  • They all look so wintry don't they, with the gorgeous backdrop, all adorned in their finest scarfs and warm coats. Except Timmy who is showing off his grrr masculinity by having an open collar. The rebel!
  • (The Timmy Masculinity - surely a future Overtones aftershave product for men? - is juxtaposed with the campest dance off led by him at the end of the song! I do love a good jig, I do!)
  • I don't really need to say any more about the outstanding vocals because they speak for themselves. Flawless.
  • I also love that it's like they spend all day just breaking into performances of songs they like. In fact, I like to imagine that they do :)
  • Let's just watch that dance off one more time. Lachie, what a filthy laugh you have!!
And if that wasn't enough, there is now a formal official video for my number ten song of the week, Say What I Feel. Time for another one of my labour intensive video breakdowns. Sally forth then...

SAY WHAT I FEEL ~ VIDEO BREAKDOWN:

  • The video starts off the boys strolling along dressed quite casually. Of course casual dressing for the Overtones still involves blazers, chinos, smart shirts and boat shoes. Can you imagine if you knew them? You would either really have to up your fashion game or just feel like a massive frump all the time. PS I really think Marks & Spencers should have them front their next autumn-winter range a la Take That & The Feeling a few years back. But I digress...
  • It's gloriously sunny and they seem like they are having a jolly good time. And why not? The location around them is just stunning. Like Darren's bow tie...
  • Ooo, they are now having a good old pedal on their bicycles. There's something quite brilliant about popstars on bikes in videos. I'm not really sure what it is but answers on a postcard would be appreciated.
  • (Never mind. I paused to write that sentence at 31s exactly and the freeze frame answered my own question. OH MY!)
  • None of them have helmets on. This would probably ruin their quiffs, but provide them with much needed protection should they fall off. Silly boys.
  • Oh, they cycle past some ladeez on a vespa (I would kill for a vespa. Figuratively speaking, not literally obviously) - who seem to come over all "oh the vapours" when the boys pedal past!!
  • God, that chorus is good isn't it? It occurs to me while they sing the soaring tune that I've possibly never seen anyone outside of Harold Bishop from Neighbours on a bike in a bowtie. Amazing.
  • I have the most unfortunate pauses in this video. Firstly the 31 SECOND PAUSE! Now a shot (1m11) of a lady's fun bags (oh how coarse) as she carries across a jug of cocktails. I'll take the big one with the lime in it please :)
  • Ooo apparently I have the same booze tastes as Mark, while Lachie opts for the eternally classic glass of chilled white. What a smooth fella.
  • They now all seem to be in some marketplace, so hands on your wallets as this is where most pickpockets operate. And you just know they would be furious if they stole a cravat from Mike's back pocket ;D
  • Faster than Clark Kent in a phonebox, they have changed lickity split into their debonair evening attire for a night on the tiles. And just to make sure you are paying attention, from around 1m55 there are some nice slo-mo close ups of the chaps. Mike with stubble is very pleasing indeed. And yay! His cravat didn't get pickpocketed. There's a great "oh you don't know how bad I can be" look from Lachie and some excellent jacket buttoning from Mark. Just those 10-15seconds on a loop would've done me to be honest :D
  • They're performing on the roof and a spiffing good show they are putting on too. Some bloke in a purple shirt is really getting down with his bad self :P
  • They all look out from the rooftop at the sunrise, presumably after an all nighter (who looks that good after an all nighter??!) My fave bit of the final few minutes is when Mike looks at Lachie as if to say, when the fuss is breakfast arriving??!
  • TRIUMPHANT!!
