Ace new singles:
- Le Kid ~ Human Behaviour: Scream! Le Kid are back already! While I'm still smitten with their almost greatest hits like first album, Oh Alright, a new song is a more than welcome treat. On twitter, they state it is a between album treat, and what a giddy little dance nugget it is too. It purrs into life with a seductive and sensual opening bracket, that not only references ONJ classic Let's Get Physical but is the most alluring intro to a song since Gwen Stefani's What You Waiting For. And like that song, it then explodes in a shower of shimmering glitter into a pulsating, vibrant, synth driven, bass lead anthem. It's all thoroughly enjoyable, effortlessly catchy and once again, showcases what a tour de force Le Kid are in providing some of the most amazing pop tunes in recent years. Delicious. My recommendation? Play loud and often alongside Madonna's Hung Up, Eric Saade's It's Gonna Rain and BWO's Lay Your Love On Me. Tremendulent.
- Scissor Sisters vs Krystal Pepsy ~ Shady Love: Oh my. Be prepared fellow Scissters as it's a brand new dawn for our intrepid heroes and it's almost like NightWork never happened. It's initially quite jarring, like when Madonna went all "on-trend" (ish) with 4 Minutes, but stick with it and there's a catchy charm hidden within this million miles an hour breakneck tune. By far the best bits are when Jake gets all falsetto on the catchphrase "shady love", however, the more I listen, the more I love Jake rapping about some bitch from Boston who dances to Madonna. Sure it's got every current trend and the kitchen sink in the tune, but ultimately it's a new sounding Scissor Sisters, yet it's still unmistakeably at it's core the Scissor Sisters you know and love.
- Anton Leuba ~ Another Saturday Night: A song that is described as "a post apocolyptic night time anthem with a killer chorus" is bound to get my interest. And what a tune it is. Set over a hypnotic, persistent beat with some stabbing synth chords, Anthony ably creates a world that's a little bit bleary, tinged with regret, but also laced with optimism. And quite the musical reward it is too - the stark nature of the track allows Anthony's vocals to take front and centre, & these are also layered with a hammond-esque church organ and a morose yet compelling choir. The vivid imagery of the lyrics and invasive nature of the tune all equal a song that is not your average pop tune, but just as essential and gratifying. More please young sir, much much more...
- Neo ~ Fighting The Dark: Hurrah! It's the return of Neo who over the past few years has provided some very amazing pop moments, not least Super Flower Power Girl, Human Frontier and Toxicated Love. This continues very much in the vein of the latter and is excitingly co-written by Andreas of Gravitonas & Charlie Mason (whose name appears on more pop songs than you may realise). Crashing drums, gothic beats and a soaring rock-influenced chorus all make this a somewhat sombre, downbeat tune but no less brilliant for this fact. Neo of course is in fine vocal fettle. The layered vocals and boombastic nature of the ending are goose bumpingly amazing and bodes extremely well for his forthcoming album, Reborn (which you can preview here). ACE.
I'm loving "Shady Love." I'm a big SS fan though.
