Oo-er. It is a leap year and today is that extra day of the leap year so I feel like I shouldn't be at work, or should at the very least be getting extra pay or something. Surely they are getting free labour out of me?! Anyway, on this fine leap years day, or whatever it is, when ladeez are proposing to fellas and fellas are running a mile, I thought I would catch up on some underrated new music. Yes I could write about the new Madonna single, Girl Gone Wild (it's ace, it's like a Sorry remix having botty love with The Wanted's Glad You Came), but she's got enough column inches so I'll focus on some well deserving up and comers...
Lectro Lips ~ Resurrection: Resurrection is not just the name of an amazing Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman episode from 1996 fact fans. No indeedy. It is also the name of a brand new song by my beloved Lectro Lips. I'll tell you why I like Lectro Lips - not only do they give all their music away asking for nothing save a bit of promotion in return, but their music is always a sizzling concotion of electro-beats, 80s inspired mania and brilliant melodies that swirl around in your head for days. With Resurrection, there's a definite whiff of modern day disco expertly blended with a propulsive, hypnotic beat & an almost industrial vibe to the vocals. The chorus almost has a tangible aroma of poppers, giving you that heady, giddy feel as you are swept up along with the tune. At the end of the choruses there are these ace talky bits, the type that everyone got excited about on the last Scissor Sisters album but no-one bothered to buy. It's all marvelously uplifting, all about the healing power of love (and probably a good shag) and leaves you with a tingly feeling in your trouser department. AMAZELLENT!!
Vanbot ~ Got To Get Out: Vanbot is very good isn't she? She managed to charm the entire internet last year by quickly releasing two very high quality pop songs onto the web and then putting out a brilliant from start to finish album. Videos and the like came later, but it didn't matter as everyone was already in love with her by then. And now she is back! With a new track, that you can actually download for no pennies at all. As it's Vanbot of course it's icy cool synth pop but full of heart & emotion that takes it to a whole other level. The introductory synths are reminscent of Sunday morning church bells - if the church was disco and the bells were leading you to seductive beat. The song then continues with vibrant verses and a chorus that crescendos into a massive outdoor rave that will have you waving your arms in the air like a ninny. What I like is that she doesn't hold back from the rave breakdowns and they are allowed to breathe fully within the confines of the song. It's never less than glorious and an amazing return for the brilliant Swedish popstrel...
Kyle Brylin ft Rihanna ~ Birthday Cake: No one really needs Rihanna duetting with anyone other than Kyle after this do they? There is no unpleasant aftertaste to the pairing and it's certainly more exciting than her recent Coldplay venture! Kyle has inserted himself seamlessly into Rihanna's Birthday Cake song with an audacity & skill that has to be admired. It's very frenetic, frantic and slightly bonkers, though the dubsteppy vibe to it is very trippy and ultimately quite alluring. It's off kilter blend of sounds, percussions and instruments makes for a brash listening experience, yet one that works as an inventive, cohesive modern pop song. And now I can't stop bloody playing it. Plus I love it when Kyle decides to wear very few clothes...
Pob ~ Come A Little Closer I like Pob formerly of Boy Banned. I like songs that have a potentially dirty title if you have a filthy mind like me. So hurrah for Pob's latest "taster" track, which is a Carry On joke just waiting to happen (titularly that is, not that the track is a joke!) Anyway, Pob's gone a bit sinister with his crashing drums, melancholy synth sounds and jerky stop start sound effects - it creates an almost gothic-electro vibe that explodes into a soaring chorus with spoken London Boys/Pet Shop Boys type spoken vocals playing off against the vocal melody. Lyrically it taps into that universal need to feel wanted and loved and closer to that special person; musically it's another facet to the development of Pob the pop star and possibly his most intriguing yet. I fully approve and can't wait for his live shows...
