I love a good boy band I do. It's not just that they are aesthetically pleasing (though often they are), but they just seem to radiate enthusiasm, energy and joie de vivre within their pop music stylings. Plus often they have quite good pop star hair which is essential around these parts. Here are updates on three of my fave up and coming groups...
GMD3 ~ CALL ME MAYBE:
That infectious little Carly Rae Jepsen song is everywhere isn't it (awaiting an appearance on Glee any time now obv) and gosh darn it all to heck, GMD3 have only gone all viral with their perky cover version of it. Already at over 69,000 views on youtube, it's a genuine sensation. What I like about GMD3 (I wrote about their cover of The Lazy Song here) is that they throw themselves into these cover versions with a real gusto that just emphasises their love of pop music. And yes of course all pop performers should be enthusiastic about their craft, but with some there is a hint of irony about it, a sense of "well i'm singing pop but I'm a thrash metal lover at heart". Here a genuine love of pop music radiates throughout their performance. And the video is a bit of a hoot too - the guys personalities get to shine through and there's some laddish antics going on that are quite amusing to watch (some muscle flexing dancing & literal phone calling going on between 55s and 1m; woolly hat dancing & gum removal between 2m50s). I am quite worried about the climate control in the studio - one fella me lad is sporting what Americans less than charmingly call "a wife beater" and the another chappie is all bundled up in his winter woollies :D Anyway, if you fancy a rollicking good time for three and a half minutes, you could do a lot worse than this!!
FUTUREKICKS ~ LASERLIGHT:
Blimey! It's all change for the artists formerly known as Promo Girl. They've changed their name (for the better), they're busy doing live gigs across the country and they also building quite the online following also. To aid with all this promotional activity, they've put out a cover version of the Jessie J/David Guetta smash better known as Laserlight. Actually, it's a bit of a downplay to say that it's just a cover version. What they've done is interpret the song to fit their own musical style, while keeping the familiar bits of it (melody, lyrics) - it ensures that they showcase not only their ability as musicians but as vocalists too. In fact Zen and Cru have some lovely harmonies early on in the song that are quite charming & the studio-live performance of the tune is packed with an addictive energy that doesn't let up for the entire tune. (Bri also joins in with the layered harmonies and also has amazing pop star hair)... While Zen is a great front man, it's clearly a team effort and they present well as a tightly gelled unit where each member complements the other. There's something that is ultimately quite compelling about watching and listening to them, that will no doubt serve them well for future success. I fully approve :D
AURYN ~ ENDLESS ROAD 7058 SPECIAL EDITION:
I may have crossed over into obsession territory with Auryn. I just find the Spanish boyband one of the most genuine and exciting to emerge in a busy boyband marketplace in the past year. They've just rereleased their debut album Endless Road 7058 (read my original review here) with 4 new tracks - a brand new version of the current single I Don't Think So (see my video review here), Spanish language tracks Para Derribar Los Recuerdos & 1900 and Don't Give Up My Game. 1900 is a relentless, driving pop song with a rocky undertone that just pulsates with a crackling electric energy from start to finish - of particular note are those sumptuous harmonies in the chorus, the deliriously giddy guitar riff and the dominant drums that just make you succumb to the rhythm of the track. It definitely deserves to be a single and the Spanish lyrics give this English listener an added sense of satisfaction. Para... starts as this gorgeously smooth ballad during the intro notes before quickly turning into a perky, strumming summery pop tune that will no doubt brighten up many a sunny evening. Don't Give Up My Game is possibly the song that could launch their career (along with original album single Breathe Into The Light) internationally however - it's a fully realised, vibrant pop tune with a saucy dance beat underneath it that just shimmies, and it's soaring singalong chorus is the delicious cherry on top of an already completely edible cake. AND! The album is available in the UK online. Hurrah times a million. Two things - 1) How about a formal recorded duet with Soraya and 2) get those UK tour dates sorted if you please :)
