Boo it's Monday. But hurrah for being able to catch up at the weekend on a plethora of ace new acts all with ace new music to promote. I won't bore you with my usual pre-review waffle, I'll just get on with the task at hand. Enjoy!
- Boy Epic ~ Too Young To Love: I must confess I've become ever so slightly smitten with Boy Epic and his incredibly charming single Too Young To Love. Not only does he have absolutely amazing pop star hair (essential), but the song you see above is a highly accomplished piece of ingratiating pop that stays with you long after the track has finished playing. The song lures you in with it's gentle synths, luscious keyboard work, pulsating beat and heavenly vocal as it details the decision to walk away from love rather than making something not quite right work. There are elements of 80s electro-pop mixed with big stadium choruses within the song, and while these work incredibly well it's Boy Epic's vocals that remain front and centre (and wisely so). His pitch helps him stand out in a crowded marketplace for all the right reasons - it's utterly compelling & intoxicating. Can't help but feel that this is the start of something special - creative, innovative, exciting. Sign me up...
- Code Red ~ Superhero: Sometimes I think I'm too old to appreciate the changing styles of a youth orientated pop scene and then something like Code Red's superhero comes along and has me completely bewitched by it's urban take on a modern day pop group. Sparse percussive beats allow an edgy r'n'b vocal to shine before rapid fire lyrics are effortlessly distributed by the fellas. There's also a nuance in the chorus that gives the song added layers and is done in a way that belies the age of the young trio - add to this a beautifully tempered middle 8 before one final chorus explosion and it's cool, edgy pop from start to finish. Essential.
- It Boys ~ Burning Up (featuring Jeffree Star): After the amazingly addictive slice of pop that was Guys Don't Like Me, it's clear that the It Boys are not content to rest on their laurels and totally amp it up for their second single, Burning Up. There's this old school almost Salt n Pepa vibe to the quasi-rapped lyrics that open the song before the totally thrilling, exhilarating and pogoing chorus kicks in - and it's clear from these two singles that the boys know how to create a chorus that will be chanted by adoring fans with their arms in the air, drinking in the energy and vibe that comes from each musical release they put their name to. I do love how they've incorporated Jeffree Star into the song - it's totally complementary to the music rather than a jarring inclusion and the song is better because of this. They are as visually arresting as they are audibly compelling - they're about to blow up so get in now, or you'll regret it :)
- I Am A Camera ~ Factory Boys: well flap me sideways and bugger me gently - this is only one of the most lovely slices of electro synth-pop I've heard all the live long year. Introduced to me by the always reliable Larry Flick of OutQ Radio, it's a classic 80s sound (reminiscent of Human League & Pet Shop Boys) with a contemporary twist to ensure it sounds totally relevant for today's discerning audience. Really clever use of sound effects and a chorus so lush & vibrant that it makes you feel like you're on some hedonistic night out, grabbing the one you love and shimmying the night away. It defies you not to sing along and resistance is futile as it inveigles it's way into your brain with it's earworm hook. GORGEOUS (as is the dude in the video, just so you know!!)
