MARTIKA ~ FLOW WITH THE GO:
Then: Martika may have stormed the pop scene with her thoughtful, touching ode to the devastation of drug use with Toy Soldiers, but her debut album was filled with smart, sassy pop dance realness that was an absolute trip to listen to. Infused with latin sensuality, spanish rythms and a forward thinking take on the teen pop princess scene at the time (see More Than You Know, If You're Tarzan), it was a riotous good time from start to finish. Her second album showcased an increased level of maturity in her songwriting and a more eclectic set of tunes (including and thanks to being a Prince muse on Martika's Kitchen and Love Thy Will Be Done) but never lost that commercial edge that made the songs effortlessly catchy. Sadly there wasn't new music from Martika (other than some tunes surfacing early 2000s and her participation in Oppera) until now! Hurrah for her being back! But before I have a shufty at her new single, it's time to review my top 5 fave Martika songs...
- 05 ~ Toy Solders
- 04 ~ Temptation
- 03 ~ Take Me To Forever
- 02 ~ Martika's Kitchen
- 01 ~ Love, Thy Will Be Done (above)
Now: Flow With The Go is the first song that previews a full length set of tunes coming later this year, entitled The Mirror Ball. It definitely matches the vibe of her uptempo tunes from Martika's Kitchen, yet feels totally contemporary with the addition of sizzling groove and pulsating beat. At times her confident vocal delivery (particularly in the first verse) comes across as the type of song Madonna should have been launching her MDNA album with, yet her rapid fire delivery and personality shine through making it all Martika all the time (particularly when she switches to some delicious Spanish language delivery). The Flow With The Go hook is both clever and infernally memorable, while the whispered "i say what" backing gives the track an added layering that lifts it above the current chart trends to something quite special indeed. She is working kooky fierceness in the video and I can't wait to see what an entire album of new material brings. Until then, i'll just flow with the go...
