Weekend Supplement ~ 29th April 2012: Smash ~ Second Hand White Baby Grand
One of my favourite new shows this US tv season is the adorable Smash. Sure, it's still finding it's feet with minor parts of the storyline, but overall I'm totally smitten and breathing a huge sigh of relief that it's already been renewed for a second season (my tip, save it for the new year again and air it after The Voice in an uninterrupted run of episodes). One thing that is a main draw for me is that the music is appropriately set within the confines of the show (apart from that slight misfire when they all burst into song at the bowling alley and it all went a bit Glee-burst-into-song-regardless) and the original music for the fictitious Bombshell musical is genuinely amazing. Up until now, the main song Let Me Be Your Star has had me completely head over heels - but the final few minutes of episode 12 bought in something new & breathtakingly stunning...
The piano heavy ballad, Second Hand White Baby Grand, was an absolute show stopping performance by Megan Hilty. Written by Marc Shaiman & Scott Whitman, it mirrors the relationship that Marilyn had with her mother and the very true story of the piano that her mother bought her (that I believe Mariah Carey later purchased). In reality, the piano was sold and Marilyn spent years looking for it to buy it back because it meant so much to her. This is reflected in the moving lyrics of the song that are reflective, pensive, poetic and oh so touching. I love songs that tell a specific story yet evoke a shared emotion with the listener and Megan's vocal performance is a masterclass in emotive delivery. She infuses her voice with appropriate feeling, never oversells the sentiment and never let the vocal seem like it's holding back. In short, it's a work of art and one of the most stunning songs I've heard this year...
"Something second hand and broken still can make a pretty sound, even if it doesn't have a place to live..."
