I love a bit of west end magic, a bit of broadway spectacular. It should come as no surprise that one of my favourite new shows this year is the rather brilliant Smash. And I'm woefully behind on updating you all (feign interest please) on some of my latest theatrical obsessions. Adding to some of my recent faves (Book of Mormon Broadway, Matilda, Ghost, How To Succeed In Business... et al) are as follows...
The Supreme Fabulettes Stars:
Gag on the eleganza as they serve up fishy realness! I adore pretty much anything Terry Ronald puts his hand to (oo-er) so when I heard he'd dipped his fingers into an all drag girl group, I was death-dropping to the floor in anticipation! Made up of Miss Vicki Vivacious, Miss Mary Mac and Miss Vanilla Lush, the girls are all sparkling glitter, flawless makeup, perky bosoomas and 60s girl group meets show girl fashion that would even make dress loving Elouise jealous. They look sickening :) Despite the height of their heels giving me vertigo, it's clear that these luscious ladies are here to serve up a quality slice of musical performance. It's not just singing, it's a presentation of their art and skills every time. They've taken classic songs and mixed them with some contemporary favourites - just the thought of The Promise (Girls Aloud) musically snogging Stop In The Name of Love (Supremes) and Rolling In The Deep rimming Proud Mary has me chuffing up the spaff with eagerness to see them. if you are London based (sadly this poor provincial boy isn't - do you have the Black Country on your tour list?!), then you can catch them all next week. It frankly looks like a rollicking good time and I will be worse off for not having caught their divalicious extravaganza. I'm already obsessed :)
Ghost does Goyte ~ Somebody I Used To Know:
I've long been a fan of the gorgeous Mark Evans who played Fiyero in one of my fave musicals ever (Wicked) and recorded a rather fine debut album (including the stunning song, jazzy-swing infused Brand New You). He's now part of Ghost The Musical and alongside his equally as lovely co-star Siobhan Dillon has recorded a cover version of the now ubiquitous Goyte song, Somebody I Used To Know. And what a brillo version it is. Right from the get go, it's got an ethereal, almost supernatural feel to it that fits right alongside the storyline and themes from the stage show. Mark takes a confident lead vocal, with Siobhan providing some otherworldly backing vocals that bring an emotive realism to the song - mirroring the pain of losing someone you love. When the song becomes a vocal tradeoff duet, the chemistry between the two leads is utterly compelling and backed up by some genuinely engrossing visuals. Carefully arranged, beautifully presented and flawless throughout. Gorgeous. Plus Mark removes that cumbersome shirt within the first few seconds, so that's just an added perk :)
Daniel Boys ~ Out Of Your World (from The In-Between):
I think I first paid attention to The In-Between musical solely because of Daniel Boys singing one of the songs on the concept album (read more about the musical here - it sounds absolutely amaze). Essentially the music is a tale about two sisters left orphaned by a car crash who stumble on a space between parallel worlds known as the in-between. This song (above) is Daniel singing as Calico, the guide who is trying to persuade one sister, Flick to travel between the worlds. There's certainly a Disney-esque quality to the track, but I think that's entirely necessary as it needs to musically convey the awe and wonder of discovering something new, something almost unimaginably brilliant. The music captures that and Daniel (always a dead cert for a solid vocal) manages to imbue his performance with an earnest yet enthusiastic quality. His singing matches the sweeping arrangement and he more than holds his own, powering the song forward & acting as a persuasive narrator and introducer to the netherworlds he sings of. It's just delightful as a magical song on it's own or as part of the bigger musical. Heavenly...
