Your ultimate 2-disc guide to The Overtones - Good Ol' Fashioned Love
You've got to hand it to The Overtones - they certainly have managed to keep a (nearly) 2 year old album fresh and exciting for each new wave of fans that have discovered it's intoxicating charms. new songs, bonus cover versions, foxy new album covers, ever so charming and engaging tv performances, countless live shows & handstands galore. If you are an early fan (like me!), then you'll no doubt have at least 2 retail versions of Good Ol' Fashioned Love (GOFL) as well as a number of download only bonuses. Well my pretties, get prepared to add two more to your collection as the Australian bonus tracks are out there for you to purchase on import. So today, for your reading pleasure is my review of the latest (and possibly last) GOFL tracks, plus your handy guide to the ultimate 2 disc edition of one of the finest, most enjoyable albums of the past 2 years. Plus some gratuitous pictures of The Overtones looking generally quite handsome. Carry on then...
The Overtones Down Under(tones)...
Australia has given us many great things. Prisoner Cell Block H. Kylie Minogue. Neighbours. Beach bronzed hottie lifeguards. Kath & Kim. And now two bonus cover versions of Aussie classics on the Australian edition of GOFL. Hurrah! Having eschewed (good word, try it, just rolls off the tongue) potential diamonds like I Touch Myself (The Divinyls - JUST IMAGINE!!) and Land Down Under (Men At Work), fortunately the chosen two tracks are proper bobby dazzlers in their own right. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap is an AC/DC cover that has been utterly transformed from a thrashtacular rock epic into a wildly seductive, beguiling number. It has a blues infused backing track & a vocal from Lachie that positively drips with persuasive reasoning, encouraging you to abandon your principles and do something delightfully sinful. What really works is how he imbues the song with a theatrical performance that brings the lyrics to life & commands attention from the listener. The finger clicking backing vocals weave through the track like a spell, gently conjouring into life your ever so wicked side. It's commanding and compelling, and utterly utterly essential. Wild One is a lively, horn-laden song that positively pops with energy the moment it hits your speakers/headphones. Tremendous vocal play between Lachie and Timmy during the chorus (alongside those always sumptuous harmonious group vocals) and I must admit I did go a bit weak at the knees when Lachie demands you to "let's go now" and adds a "woo" for good measure...:D A fine addition to The Overtones canon and plenty to tide you over with until album two this autumn (*SCREAM*).
