Single Selection: Ed Drewett & The Beach Boys...

ooo I had a reet treat this morning when two (granted quite different, but excellent) songs popped up in my inbox. One from someone who I think is one of the most talented and exciting new offerings Britain has to offer the world music scene, and one from industry legends who couldn't put a foot wrong if they tried. Both have made me do a little happy dance of joy at the ri-sick-ulousness of their current, quite brilliant singles. Here's what you need to know...

Ed Drewett ~ Good Morning:

Ever since Ed Drewett popped onto the solo scene with his dapper look on the golfing range in his exquisite Champagne Lemonade (review here), I've been waiting for the world to discover what his burgeoning fanbase already knows - that behind the natural charm and razor sharp cheekbones is one talented fella who has not only helped pen some massive worldwide hits for The Wanted, but has a growing catalogue of his own songs that delight and entertain. Good Morning is a laid back tune brimming with easy going vibes that has some gorgeous piano riffs sparkling behind a confident, assured vocal that powers the melody of the song forward. Add in some orchestral sounding synths, some down and dirty bass guitar (I think), Ed ensuring his vocal has emotive nuance that bring the romantic, lyrical content to life and you have a lovely, laxidaisical, catchy summer soundtrack. Love the acapella ending to the song - somehow it seems to mirror the night ending and morning beginning, giving the song some perfect symmetry. And good news cheapskates - the song is available to download free at Ed's website (click link above video)! BONZA! Be sure to catch Ed at showcase live - it's bound to be a corker... (here are some other fine morning songs):
  • Good Morning (from Singing In The Rain)
  • Maroon 5 ~ Sunday Morning
  • Razorlight ~ In The Morning
  • Johnny Cash ~ Sunday Morning Coming Down
The Beach Boys ~ That's Why God Made The Radio:

Well flap me sideways, bugger me gently and book me a return ticket to Kokomo! The Beach Boys are back and their sumptuous new single is as timeless sounding as ever. It's like they've never been away. You don't need spotify, iTunes, soundcloud et al when you have a song that eschews those modern contraptions and places you back in a simpler time when people got excited to hear a new song for the first time on the radio in the car, or at work... Coupled with the layered production values of this song are the sumptuous Beach Boy harmonies, the song isn't exactly the most cutting edge tune ever, but that's the whole point. You could be listening to this forty years ago or in forty years time and the structure of the tune makes it a classic from start to finish. Spread the love and sunshine to a whole new generation indeed. Heaven. Now listen to Wilson Phillips take on the gorgeous God Only Knows right after. Oh and here are some other amazing songs about radio...
  • Donna Summer ~ On The Radio
  • Madonna ~ Turn Up The Radio
  • McFly ~ One For The Radio
  • Tommy Page ft NKOTB ~ Turn On The Radio
  • Tiffany ~ Radio Romance
  • Robbie Williams ~ Radio (also diff songs by Beyonce, Alesha Dixon et al)
