Weekend Supplement ~ 11th June 2012: Your ideal summer playlist...

Ooo jolly good. After several days of rain, there is a glimpse of sun today. Britain will be pleased. Frankly, the best thing about summer is the deluge of songs with summer in the title that you can drag out for 3 glorious months before packing off again until next June. Here are some of my faves. Am I missing any??

  • Abba ~ Summer Night City: Of course Abba must open this compilation. They paint a vivid picture of balmy summer evening full of salacious secrets that is oh so hard to resist. Pop doesn't come more perfect than this...
  • DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince ~ Summertime: Laid back laxidaisical rap that just drips from the speakers like a melting ice cream. It all sounds like a rollicking good time, even if it does seem to be that fatigued fun you have in the sun...
  • The Party ~ Summer Vacation: Ah one of my fave teen groups from the early 90s. This was their super cute ode to school ending and those long weeks of freedom that lay ahead. Summer, I'm down with that thing indeed...
  • Sabrina ~ Boys Boys Boys (Summertime Love): Ah a girl after my own heart. Who wasn't a bit boy crazy that one summer they first went abroad without their parents? Her voice may be as thin as paper but when you're frolicking around with such gay abandon who gives a fig?!
  • Steps ~ Summer of Love: Worthy of a chart placing much higher than the number 5 position it landed at (blame dull as dishwater When I Said Goodbye as the main A side), this flamenco infused song always gets my hips gyrating and who would want to miss that thrusty treat?!
  • Girls Aloud ~ Long Hot Summer: Released about 5 weeks later than it should have been (although technically it's a summer retrospective), the jangly beats and forthy chorus absolutely do have you shaking like a cool lemonade. Utter brillz.
  • Bananarama ~ Cruel Summer (Exotica Version): A jolly fine reimagining they did of their own classic hit for the French only 2002 Exotica album. It adds some latin rhythms, sensual vibes and an overall party atmosphere that has you begging for more more more...
  • A1 ~ Summertime of Our Lives: Thank god that the boy band revolution happens about once every ten years. A1 were one of the premier groups to keep an eye on at the turn of the millenium and this arms-in-the-air singalong ditty is one of their most charming...
  • Belinda Carlisle ~ Summer Rain: Yay! Love this song. 1990 belonged to the Runaway Horses album and this was a dark & dirty doozy. Belinda made it all sound so seductive and delicious. And summer does make you bloody horny, doesn't it?!
  • Bucks Fizz ~ Can't Stand The Heat: Ooo a bit of a cheat this one. No summer in the title and the heat doesn't really relate to summer heat, but it's a jolly good pop song that was a bit of an antithesis to their more poppy Land Of Make Believe...
  • Magnus Carlsson ~ Crazy Summer Nights: Magnus somehow makes every song that he sings sound like it should be performed loud and proud at every gay pride festival ever held. This exuberant little ditty is no different at all...
  • John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John ~ Summer Nights: I nearly completely forgot about this one! EL SCANDALO! It's basically the song that everyone sings drunk at the end of the evening with the girls & gays on one side and slobbering, looking-for-action dudes on the other. It's an amazing four minutes :D
  • LFO ~ Summer Girls: They like girls who wear abercrombie and fitch (Chinese food makes them sick). God knows what they would have tried to rhyme Hollister with!! Should really be played directly after Summertime by Will Smith but oh well :)
  • Jason Mraz ~ Summer Breeze: There's something quite nice about sitting around a campfire on the beach and strumming a guitar for a group singalong. Jason manages to make Summer Breeze sound like it should have been performed this way all along :)
  • Debbie Gibson ~ Blame It On The Summer Nights: Heavenly vocals and I'm loving the theme of "ah well, it was the mixture of the crazy heat and the shimmering moon that made me do it". Perfect for those next morning regrets and oh so salacious memories :)
  • Xylos ~ Summerlong: Entirely gorgeous tune that evokes memories of every lovely summer romance you've ever had. Set over a propulsive beat and fuzzy guitars, the vocal shines pure as the sun and brings the track to life & leaves you aching for more by the end...
  • KD Lang ~ Summer Fling: From an album that's called Invincible Summer, I end up playing this just as summer creeps up on me every year. Everything KD sings sounds just exceptional and this is as gorgeous as anything she's put her vocals to...
  • Nat King Cole ~ Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer: Because it was the title of a whole Gilmore Girls episode once and it doesn't get any better than that :)
  • Beach Boys ~ Your Summer Dream: A more melancholy, reflective Beach Boys than some of their more perky upbeat songs, but this just oozes with their sumptuous harmonies and signature sound. Blissful..
  • Abba ~ Our Last Summer: The perfect way to finish off this compilation :)
