Weekend Supplement ~ 30th June 2012: Whatever happened to...??

Pop is a fickle game isn't it? One minute you're the David Sneddon who is telling England to stop living a lie and racing to the top of the charts. The next minute you're the David Sneddon whose frankly very good indeed Best of Order is limping into the charts at 19 (though to be fair, he went on to become the Nexus songwriting whiz & has penned major hits for Lana Del Ray, Morton Harket and Hurts. Brill!) So thinking about the fickleness of fame has gotten me yearning for second albums from these once promising pop chappies...

Bryn Christopher

Brummie soul singer Bryn Christopher launched onto the pop scene with the dazzling debut single, The Quest (above). Matching his gorgeous and distinctive vocal style with some old school-meets-contemporary, horn laden soul sounds was an intoxicating mix; throw in his natty dapper style and I was smitten. His debut album, My World, took influences from Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett & Terence Trent D'arby and produced a style that has since become ubiquitous with Gnarls Barkley, Bruno Mars et al. Sadly, the album didn't do as well as the record label wanted - perhaps it was just too ahead of it's time. So I wondered, what happened to Bryn Christopher? Well, I think he's put down vocals on a track by Monsta called Holdin On. Amidst the grinding dubstep instrumentation, stuttering electro-sound effects & this propulsive rhythm emerges Bryn's vocals - as powerful & emotive as ever, Thank fuck for that then, eh??

David Jordan

Oh I was so blooming obsessed with Sun Goes Down when it first came out. Everything about it just seemed so bloody perfect to me. Pounding bass, addictive chorus, an almost musical theatrical chorus and a confident, brassy vocal from young David. He managed to imbue the song with a pop majesty that carried it forward yet sound innovative thanks to clever use of instruments not normally front & centre in a pop song. His debut album showed an even more eclectic side to David and I've been waiting for more ever since. Luckily some internet research shows that he's still working on new music, and a stark, contemplative & ultimately touching ballad - Fallen Star - has emerged as part of his new canon of songs. It's the perfect showcase for his delicious vocals and I'm definitely eager to hear more...
