Olympics 2012: The Playlist...

Friday night was dominated by the tv event of the year - Caroline finally getting booted out of the Big Brother UK House! Hurrah! Wait..., I'm jesting. Like a jester on jesting tablets at jester camp. Of course it was the Olympics Opening Ceremony. All in all it was rather spectacular. Yes it may have been as busy as your Grandma's wallpaper and matching carpet pattern set, but definitely an epic opener with a sensational and apt instrumental soundtrack. There was the Queen (not Helen Mirren) cameo-ing with Mr Bond, jumping out a helicopter and then seen checking her nails when the British team FINALLY came out; there was Middle Earth, NotLadyGaga pounding some drums, death eaters attacking pony boys (before being fended off by an army of umbrella-holding flying Mary Poppinses and much much more. Bonkers. Here (bookended by what should have opened the ceremony and what should close the ceremony) are some Olympic themed, British act songs to play while watching the beach volleyball tournament later...

  • OPENING CEREMONY = Spice Girls ~ Spice Up Your Life: Imagine! Just imagine if the ceremony had kicked off with this frenetic pop gem from 1997? With the Spice Girls reunited, buzzing around in little space ships, dropping off Olympic atheletes into the stadium? Would have been epic.
  • THE GAMES = Spandau Ballet ~ Gold: Classic British pop from the 80s, all nu-romantic and optimistic, then all powerful and confident with it's thrusting declaration of "GOLD! (gold!)". Tremendulent.
  • THE GAMES = Take That ~ Greatest Day: Ah, the That. This song may have soundtracked every person who went through to the next round on X Factor last year, but is still a fitting and rousing song to play over a montage of great Olympiad moments, n'est pas? (see also Rule The World)
  • THE GAMES = Pet Shop Boys ~ Winner: It may be their most gentle and meandering single for ages, but there is no doubting the charm of this track. Plenty of opportunities to play sound bites of the athletes saying something inspirational before turning up the chorus of "You're a winner". Aces.
  • THE GAMES = Girls Aloud ~ Jump: For your love, etc. Of course this will soundtrack lots of clips of long jump, high jump and the Queen jumping out of a helicopter. Plus it's perky enough to soundtrack any live bloopers that may and inevitably will happen. Titter.
  • THE GAMES = Leona Lewis ~ Run: Light up light up, etc. Of course this will soundtrack lots of people running, more people running and perhaps a shot of the Olympic torch during the light up bit. If anyone falls over, they will probably close up on the wound and quickly switch to Bleeding Love.
  • THE GAMES = Annie Lennox ~ Why: The Olympics is as much about those crushing disappointments, when victory seems so close only to be snatched away at the last second. This would provide a moment of class, grace and elegance while we remind ourselves of those sad what-might-have-been moments...
  • THE GAMES = Kaiser Chiefs ~ Every Day I Love You Less and Less: OR! You could just go the bitter route and play the Kaiser Chiefs classic "gone off you now" anthem instead. Hizzle to the Ah!
  • THE GAMES = Heather Small ~ Proud: Why hello, hello to you Miss Heather Small. Obvious choice yes, but why Miranda didn't make an Olympic special of her sitcom (which should have followed a 2011 Christmas special) is the biggest tv crime since The Royle Family forgot to do a Royle/Royal Wedding special. BAH.
  • CLOSING CEREMONY = Spice Girls ~ Viva Forever: Perfection. (But also maybe as a medley with Headlines)

  1. Love this playlist. I was impressed how upbeat the Parade of Nations was musically, but this playlist would keep the party going for the full two weeks. Well done.
