Weekend Supplement ~ 8th July 2012: An eclectic mix of new singles...

This relentless rain is making me introspective and forcing me to dig a bit deeper than my usual love for frothy throwaway pop (though the most played of the week list below doesn't really aid that theory :D). Anyway, there are a number of songs that have caught my interest over the past week which make me seem like I have a deep and abiding love for an eclectic array of music. I'm not sure I do. I just like a good song when I hear it :) Anyway, here's some to keep you going...

Lets Go Safari ~ BYOB:

I'm barely over Lets Go Safari's excellent song, Jane Doe (which I wrote about here), and already there's a new tune to fall in love with. BYOB (out August 20th) is a relentlessly pounding, ska-infused anthem that pulsates along with an amiable swagger. It's rhythmic drum beats and energetic guitar frame soaring synth effects, an engaging vocal and pogo-ing chorus that sucks you in from the first second you hear it. It's expertly layered together to create a monster wall of sound that invades the senses and refuses to let go until you submit. Resistance is futile when the music is this good.
**UPDATE - 17.08.12** Well, 6 weeks on, the song has inviegled it's way into my brain and I find myself singing it at the most random of occasions (work team meeting, in the queue for the till at Tescos, the opening ceremony of the Olympics when Voldemort appeared... weird!) It's finally out to purchase on Monday (20th August) and adding to the appeal is an all too seductive remix from Your Pretend Boyfriend. In fact it's less of a remix and more of an ice cool, shimmering, electro reconstruction of the tune & transforms it into a throbbing, pulsating electro-goth anthem that just refuses to quit. Utterly amazing as an alternative of a song so good that even band member Clive is going to buy it. Brillopants.

David Rael ~ Nothing Could Have Gone Better:

Having charmed me as part of the Zig Zag birds, David's solo EP, In Time, is an exquisite musical treat that showcases what a fine, accomplished craftsman of superb tunes Mr Rael actually is. Across the whole EP, David has done an extraordinary job of recreating a full orchestral sound, packing his songs with clarinets, trombones, accordions, violins and Californian vocal harmonies. The first track of the EP is an excellent representation of this. It's a lush, 60s inspired song with sumptuous piano, echoing Beach Boys-esque vocals and a simply beautiful vocal performance that commands attention. Add to this lyrical content that matches great literature, paired with music that's allowed to breathe and flow & it's a stunning piece of work that is instantly timeless & classic. Astonishingly good.

Andreas Moe ~ Collecting Sunlight:

Stockholm born Andreas Moe has put together a number of gorgeous songs for his debut UK EP, entitled Collecting Sunlight. The title track of this (and innovative, visual treat video) is a gently crescendoing, emotive work of beauty that weaves intricate melodies alongside an impassioned vocal delivery. The track almost flirts with electonica sounds that permeate the production, yet allow an organic instrumental to propel the track forward into a soaring middle 8, delicate pre-final chorus pause and that ingratiating, delicious singalong that comes to an all too soon close. Andreas' vocal and lyrical talents are clearly on display & a live piano version (here) shows his innate love of pop, in allowing him to strip back and reconstruct the song in a different way. It's a beautiful song that deserves a lot more attention and worldwide success. The EP, by the way, is equally as wonderful.
