Video Breakdown: Aiden Leslie ~ Diamond Dreams

Well you all know by now that I'm a sucker for a good looking pop dude. But I have some depth to me - the bloke has to have some musical chops to back up the appealing package. Aiden Leslie is an American singer who has been releasing music for a little while & caught my attention with his sparkling new single, Diamond Dreams. And luckily, Aiden is not only a bit of a looker but purveyor of fine pop-dance tunes too. Diamond Dreams is the tale of a (possibly) small town boy taking his first steps in the big city and lyrically brings to life those feelings of trepidation, excitement, wonder & endless possibility. Over a down & dirty, fuzzy funked up bassline comes a swirl of electro-disco synths & percolating beats that drive the music forward, while Aiden delivers a fine, unfettered vocal which particularly soars when he gives some amazing falsetto in the chorus. The HI_NRG nature of the song recalls at times 80s legends Stock Aitken & Waterman if they had remixed a few Erasure tracks - and the result is utterly intoxicating & entirely infectious. I can imagine hearing this at 11.58pm on a Saturday night in a club & waving my arms around like a ninny. I love when music has the power to lift your spirits & this track with it's spot on production, likeable vocals & propulsive energy does just that. And here's what you get in the video...

  • It's all a bit blurry at first (I believe it's called "creating an atmosphere"), but then mercifully Aiden comes into view. He is topless. He has pecs that you could quite literally bounce a quarter off.
  • (It's probably best not to bounce a quarter off him the next time you see him though - it's not the most friendly of welcomes now is it?)
  • While Aiden is singing (topless, hurrah!) there are lots of clips of neon city lights interspersed to create a narrative flow. I think it's New York City, but geography never was my strong point :S
  • Aiden is wearing black leather gloves. There is something about black leather gloves that make me go a bit funny in the trouser region. This may be somewhat of an overshare...
  • For the chorus, Aiden has added a few clothes and a rather nifty, slicked back hair style which I love. He is wearing shades and has a good old shimmy to the music.
  • Verse two - Aiden has changed into a rather expensive looking suit. He looks just as good suited as he did with his pecs out. He continues to boogie along to the music, but adds in some smouldering looks to the camera to convey his intensity & emotions. I do love me some smouldering hunk :)
  • Chorus two - Aiden is wandering through the city. He's wearing a leather jacket, unzipped enough to reveal those rippling chest muscles. He's having better luck than I did in NYC - I was crossing the road at Times Square and someone crossing the other way quite literally stole my Starbucks out of my hand. True story.
  • During that euphoric middle 8 ("gotta start letting the love in"), Aiden pauses while the city moves at super speed around him. I love little touches like this in videos - something that isn't too elaborate, but really brings to visualisation how the lyrics are playing out e.g. the world may move at a super fast pace, but unless you take a break to start letting the love in, it's going to pass you by before you know it. Amaze.
  • That note that topless Aiden holds coming out of the middle 8 is a true pop utopia moment - something that gets your spine tingling & makes you at one with the music. Glorious stuff :)
  • More leather glove shots (oh yes please) and more dancing as those diamond dreams breed reality. BRILL.
