I like Warren Nomi I do. As a purveyor of fine pop, he is one of the best. I've already written about his sensational song, This Summer I, and here is the gist of what I said...
"It's a tune about learning to put yourself first, taking new chances and discovering aspects of yourself that have previously remain hidden. This is set over a transcendental dance beat, with an addictive echoing synth riff which gives the song an anchor & memorable identity. The main draw here is the vocal talent of Warren - he's infused the song with emotion, yearning & longing that give the tune a real layered, meaningful texture. Plus he has shades of a young Darren Hayes in his voice which makes the whole package all too hard to resist. What's also a real thrill is the original version - it's much more anchored in early Madonna and the pared down tempo gives the song an entirely different atmosphere that's just as lovely as the remixed single version. I rarely find pop throwaway, and this justifies why the entire genre is often the most worthy of them all."
Since then, Warren has put together a video to accompany the track - here's the skinny on what happens...
- Warren is on a beach. This is the perfect way to show that it is summer. If he were throwing himself around the snow topped mountains of the Alps, we'd all be a bit confused right about now...
- Warren is trying all the fairground rides on the pier. He may or may not have tried them before as he is singing about doing new things and to be honest, looks a little uncertain about it all.
- (Though I'll confess that i'm never sure myself about these rides on a pier. What if the sea salt in the air has weakened the bolts and it all ends up a bit opening sequence of Final Destination 3??)
- ARTY! There is now a split screen. Including a bit of black and white. Warren does look quite fine in a white t-shirt, doesn't he??
- The white t-shirt may actually be a pink t-shirt now it is back in colour. Warren is wearing some sort of s&m straps around it. I fully approve :D
- By the time we get to 40s, Warren seems to be having quite a fun old time of it all, riding the rollercoaster, frolicking in the sea. It's like the start of Grease but without John Travolta ruining it all by being there...
- Warren is managing to sing the words to the song while being spun around on one of the rides. That is commitment to your craft when you probably want to just put your hands in the air and go "whheeeee"!!
- In other news, at the 1m mark, Warren is attempting to win a prize (probably an oversized Koala or Animal from the Muppets) by shooting a water gun to fill a balloon up. A better man than me could have made a brilliant innuendo there :)
- At 1m12-15s Warren is working a pole on the beach as well as doing the *tie-my-hands-above-my-head* move, which could also just be an empowering dance move. No wonder fellas have looked at me odd when I've got that wrong on the dancefloor :D
- Warren gets his fortune told ("this track is bound to rocket up the dance charts") and misses on the mini hoop. I also miss everytime on those bloody things. It is probably why I was always picked last for team sports at school. Sniffle...
- (Does anyone else really want to go and see Cirque Du Soleil - Iris now??)
- Over the next 30 seconds, Warren uses emotive facial expressions and also sand to convey the message of the song. There is not enough creative use of sand in videos these days, so extra points for that :)
- Actually, now is as good a time as any to point out that the video does a very good job of conveying a certain euphoria in just letting yourself go & enjoying life to the max. There's a joyful aura to the whole visual experience that spills over into your actual mood. I feel quite chipper now...
- More beach based and fun fair frolics happen. There is also a glimpse of manly shoulder flesh just after the 3m mark should that thing be your bag (for the record, yes. Yes it is my bag)!!
