Single Selection: Scarlett's Roses ~ Back To Disneyland
There is a lot to love about Scarlett's Roses at the moment. Whether it's the feeling that you are getting in just at the right time before this buzzy band becomes huge; or whether it be their effortlessly exuberant tunes that are bound to brighten up the most disappointing of days; or whether it be you just working out which fella in the group you have the cosmic horn for most at the moment (toss up between Daniel and Ryan today)... see? There's something for everyone. I'm still beyond smitten with their glorious pop tune, Truth Be Told (listen here), which - fact fans - went down a storm when I took it on Larry Flick's Out Q Radio show a few months back. The gang are back with a brand new track - and they are giving it away free, which is mighty generous because it is far superior than some of the shit I've paid 79p for lately :) Lyrically, it's the tale of relationship that has lost a bit of it's sparkle so the couple want to return to the place where their love blossomed (Disneyland. I bet they got filthy on Pirates of the Caribbean the mucky pair)... Once again, what is brilliant about the song is that gives the male-female perspective through the different vocals. Scarlett has one of the sweetest pop voices this side of Voice of the Beehive, while Ryan's conversational singing style is utterly engaging. The two vocals play off each other to deliriously gleeful effect & equally genius is the observational rap that leads into a call & response ("I'm gonna spend it ('no you ain't')")... Add to this the ska inspired vocal with soaring sax, effective hand claps, down and dirty bass (vaguely reminiscent of early No Doubt) that totally complement the personality of the song. That final chorus becomes (much like Truth Be Told) a massive pub style sing a long that would sound aces in that setting but equally stirring chanted by thousands of people on a scorching summer evening at a music festival. And I can't help but feel that is where Scarlett's Roses music is heading. They represent the every man and woman through their cheeky scamp image & thoroughly addictive music - and the fact that it makes you feel so gosh darn tooting is far better than any anti depressant I've ever heard of. Check out - and download - this percolating pop gem right here...
BONUS ALERT! Somehow, I'd missed the fact that unfeasibly Scarlett's Roses have covered my 3rd favourite Whitney song ever - One Moment In Time! *SCREAM* Possibly in a church! *SACRILICIOUS SCREAM* Anyway, they've turned the soaring, anything-is-possible Olympic anthem into a mighty fine acoustic mid-tempo strummer that just sparkles from start to finish. It's still sweetly inspiring and lovely - Ryan does a mighty fine job on the verses, while Scarlett's vocals during the chorus are enough to melt your heart (particularly when she taps into the lower register of her voice. Just love it). Of course Ollie provides some sterling & resonant sax accompaniment & Daniel's no slouch on the guitar - it's a true collaborative effort that comes together with exquisite (yet occasionally wistful thanks to a few lyric changes & that honest, raw rap in the middle 8) joy. Heavenly.
