Weekend Supplement: Betty Who ~ You're In Love

Hurrah! Dame Betty of Who is back with the second single from her marvelous (and still free) EP, The Movement (if you don't have it already, what are you waiting for you goobers?!) Following up the incandescent Somebody Loves You is no easy feat but, although I'm besotted with her track High Society, You're In Love is the smart choice. The good news is it's not a cover of the Wilson Phillips classic (which could also be the bad news depending on your point of view)... rather, it's an effortlessly cool piece of soaring pop that focuses both on indelible melodies & lyrics that will touch even the hardest of hearts. Betty's voice is a sparkling pop gem that is one of the reasons this song works so well - and definitely one of the reasons her pop career seems to be gaining enormous traction with new admirers amassing daily. She has a knack of teasing out the most subtle of emotions within the lyrics and bringing them into vivid focus as she sings; this masterful insightful performance ensures that despite the upbeat hook, the wistful nature of romance is not lost in the electro-beats & swirling synths. And of course the video is as much a treat as the song itself - Betty whizzes around New York with her fella (who it has to be said is incredibly hot) but they never quite get their groove on. Like the song, it's tinged with sadness & plays on the friends or lovers theme of the tune itself. Lovely. With a vision this clear, it's obvious that everyone's summer best of list is going to feature Betty, no need for the question of who...
