Single Selection: Julian Velard ~ Tiny Aeroplane

Fact: Julian Velard believes that Europeans get far too close to people in coffee houses. This is true. I once accidentally headbutted the back of a nun when I dropped my phone in Starbucks. To be fair, I didn't realise she was a nun (though the wimple should have given it away) and she was so up in my grill that my head had no where to go but the back of her head when I was bending down. ANYWAYS! This isn't about the personal space issues of my fellow Europeans but rather about the glorious musical return of Sir Julian of the Velard. Prior to his upcoming New York City themed album (see his pledge music page here), he's released a darling little nugget of a track entitled Tiny Aeroplane (listen here). It's the all too well known lyrical tale of an all consuming obsession - whether it be the lost love of your life, or that unrequited emotion that can take over your thoughts until you can bear no more. Set over a sparse yet percussive groove, this serves to underscore the relentless nature of obsession (though don't mistake it for being needlessly persistent; nay - it's a sprightly beat that propels the song forward and is brightened by some deliriously delicious synth chimes). Julian's conversational vocal style in the verses makes it all feel a bit more intimate - like a chat between friends (or at least a chat you are eavesdropping on due to your close proximity in a European coffee bar :D). As the somewhat unconventional chorus kicks in, Julian's voice soars with an impassioned release of the frustration of his situation and it is a glorious sound to behold. Similarly the middle 8 solidifies the song's status as effortlessly engaging pop rocker that might be the most chirpy, sad song since Abba's Super Trooper. Julian's always had a clever knack of providing smart, relatable lyrics and his ear for mellifluous magnificence certainly hasn't diminished. Buy the song when it's released on 14th June 2013 and do pledge to his bound-to-be-amazing upcoming album. That is all...
