Ooo. What is not to love when three sassy lassies (in the Scottish term for ladeez obviously, not a reference to the famous pooch) team up to slay the world with the sparkling brand of feisty pop?! Ms Trez (hey! Just got that! I'm so slow) have been building their fanbase steadily for some time now with amazing dancefloor fillers like Louder and cooing pop gems like Sweet Liar. Now they are launching their 7 track EP ("Beats Our Guide" - available from all good online mp3 emporiums or just click here!) onto an unsuspecting world. Well buckle up I say and stand by to be stunned because things are about to get FAB-U-LOUS. Here are just some of the many merits you will be rewarded with for purchasing this essential selection...
- Top notch writing ~ I love how throughout the EP the songs remain personal to the girls life experiences over the past year or so, yet still remain relateable to your every day listener. There is deliciously naughty innuendo balanced out with delectably sweet tender moments - and at every turn the trio are able to perform with the right level of emotion, the subtle nuancing that bring these words to life. Adam Robinson and Thomas Karlsson are always reliable creators of ridiculously insane earworm pop (because they LOVE pop they know how to write it) and whether just a duo or writing with Ms Trez, they deliver every time :)
- Man Up ~ Any disappointment I had that this wasn't a cover version of the Book of Mormon Broadway track soon evaporated once I heard the percolating beats and attitude fuelled vocals that permeate this incredibly catchy tune. It's out and out pop chorus balanced with a down & dirty beat that details how the ladies want a fella to just be a decisive dominant dude :) And who doesn't love a bit of domination?! Oh, I might have veered off there - :P Anyway! The song is the type of tune that The Saturdays would invade twitter with to beg fans to take to number one, but Ms Trez would effortlessly glide to the top on merits alone. A solid start that has you oh so eager for more...
- L.A. At Night ~ The title becomes a surprisingly catchy refrain (perhaps the best since Rachel Stevens' Sweet Dreams My LA Ex) and amps up those fuzzy synth beats that will have you shimmying like a ninny til dawn on the dancefloor. Add to this a riDONKulously amazing semi-rapped middle 8 & a second chorus refrain of "can you feel the heat tonight/Hollywood got swag tonight", you are almost overwhelmed with pop genius. Also a brilliant ending that's as definitive and demanding as their LA adventures. The pulsing nature of the song sucks you into their giddy world before spitting you out, leaving you swirling, gleeful and wanting more. And that's L.A. for you :D
- Sweet Liar ~ As gorgeous now as it was when I first heard it. The pain and emotion in the individual vocal performances still resonate and make the track a soaring anthem to emerging from the dark relationship & becoming the better person for it. Their delicious layered harmonies in the chorus effortlessly weave together like raindrops on roses & give the song extra power through their combined voices. the real test of a tightly written & performed song is how it fares when it transcends into other genres... so i'm pleased to report that thanks to the Milo & JoJo Da Silva remix on the EP, it emerges as the most euphoric dance track you'll hear as spring gently nudges summer into being. A ferocious beat, down and dirty synths and a puslating rhythm all give the song some added gravitas & drama (yet the sweet, intoxicating sound of the girls voices easily shines through). Be prepared for some absolutely spine tingling glomwobbling at around 1m30s - if you're not slut-dropping with the best of them at this point, then you may well want to be checking your pulse. It's a swirling, sweaty, intense, majestic remix that inflames the senses & has you pounding that dancefloor hard. Tremendous.
- Louder ~ It may have been give a bit of a rejig for the EP which certainly spices it up for long time fans. Within those throbbing synth beats remains the original genius of the song (with saucy lyrics like "You play rough, I play harder". OOER!) that casts a spell over your hips, grinding them onto the dancefloor, the girls deliver a sultry vocal that all culminates in a schlager fuelled, hands in the air, exuberant chorus. It's instantly memorable and a stand out entry in the crowded girl group market. Safe to say, Wonderland this is not. It's quite clear that all involved, including the writers and producers, have an inherent love and understanding of pop that shines forth in each note, beat and vocal treat. As Rachel Stevens once sang, more more more please :)
- Y.E.A.H ~ The final original track on the EP is the first time fans have been able to get their hands on the anthemic tune Ms Trez performed at Stockholm Pride - and the song that has the lyrical content from which the EP is named! DJ play our freaking song indeed because this instantaneously works it's way into your brain, takes up long term residence and refuses to get out no matter how much you resist. Just give in because resistance is futile when the music is as addictive as this & when the lyrics are as euphoric and empowering as they are here. What's particularly marvy is that every single song on the EP could be a single so you feel like you are listening to the first half of a greatest hits album. Bloody super I say. EP 2 later this year please, just in time for Christmas would be nice.
