Hurrah pop fans! DeeDee Loves Me is back. She has returned. And about damn time. I wrote about her several times a few years back when I became more than smitten with songs like the raucous Balls and the ridiculously catchy Endure. And while those songs don't feature on her relaunched soundcloud page, there's plenty of new music to get your teeth into and enjoy - for DeeDee certainly knows how to create music that grabs you by the shoulders, shakes some sense into you and then leaves you with a little kiss on the cheek. Her lyrics certainly pull no punches and these give her collection of songs zest, personality, depth and character. And I love that she has returned with a look as striking as her music - two tone hair showcasing diversity, emotion red lipstick signifying passion, kooky turquoise nails to underscore her love of avant garde icons (such as David Bowie and Ziggy Stardust) and stars in her 'do to prove that she is what she will become. Don't just take my word for it that DeeDee Loves Me is your next favourite pop star - check out her soundcloud page for 4 riveting tunes. Here are my thoughts on what you'll find :)
- Everybody's Out To Get Me ~ a swirling 80s power-pop-meets-synth backdrop so alluring that Belinda Carlisle would kill for it acts as the canvas on which DeeDee tells her story of paranoia. Through rapid fire lyrics (that are delivered similar to the way Geri did in her best song, "It's Heaven, It's Hell (Being Geri Halliwell)") in the verses, a tale of claustrophobic woes is weaved leading to a soaring chorus that hooks you and won't let go. It's all breakneck speed and relentless beats that entrall and mesmerise - as well as mirror the inner conflict the singer has with her current situation. Despite the downbeat lyrics, it's all delivered with such intense ferocity that it's hard not to become at one with the song (and who hasn't had a day where everything goes wrong and you feel like the entire world is your enemy)? Sterling stuff :)
- Mirrors and Discoballs ~ if the previous number evoked giddy 80s realness, this dreamy little tune channels elements of Abba and Donna Summer to magnificent effect. While you step back in time to do the bus stop and get down with your bad self, a shimmering dancefloor mirage emerges from your speakers. It has a deliciously cabaret-esque opening and cleverly repurposes the titular objects as metaphors for the fractured relationship. In a way, it's War of the Roses the music version and frankly there's nothing more tragic than teardrops at the discotheque - yet dancing can be healing cathartic medicine; and the chorus to the song will wash away any woes you were feeling when you first started listening. Oh please consider this as a single at some point. I can only imagine how exquisite the video will be...
- The Undesirables ~ Talking of singles, if you are looking for an emphatic first single then you could do a lot worse than this. It punches, rather than moseys it's way out your speakers with the bass slapping the backbeat like high heels on a hard wood floor. Crashing sound effects bounce off synth effects so clear they could be in your living room. If you want a classic comparison, there's vague similarities to Alisha's Attic's Intense - yet that Eastern-tinged middle 8 gives it a personality all of it's own. In a way, it's the "fuck you" response to Everybody's Out To Get Me and a glorious call to arms for anyone who has felt a bit out of sorts with the world. Sing loud, sing often and feel pretty darn tooting about yourself...
- Compuslory ~ I do love a song that can be taken more than one way. Initially this sparkling pop gem could be about the stark reality of unrequited love, with DeeDee putting her heart on her sleeve in a way nobody has since Meredith Grey implored McDreamy to "love me, pick me, choose me" in Grey's Anatomy. That in of itself could give this song it's own wistful yearning. However, remember those stars in DeeDee's hair? It could be a take on the fame game, the challenges of getting in the public eye and being beloved for what you do. Either way, it's a bold opening up of her inner most thoughts - and set to a galloping, nu-wave track that instantly inveigles it's way into your synapses. She's not wrong though - soon the whole world will find it compulsory to love DeeDee. And how apt that her launch into stardom comes exactly 30 years after Madonna's equally stunning debut... More please. And soon...
