Weekend Supplement: Simon Curtis ~ Meteor
While I'm sure he's been a busy little bee behind the scenes, in terms of new music it's been fairly quiet on the Simon Curtis front since his first commercially available album RA in 2011. Sure, there have been a couple of new songs since then (his Ace of Base inspired duet with RoDaneshei, Wicked Baby & his Erasure-esque haunting ballad Starlight), but generally pretty quiet. Seeing as blogging new Simon Curtis music pretty much kept this blog in it's early days (2006 onwards), to have an almost 2 year gap has been a bit of a pill to be honest with you. Luckily he's busy prepping for a brand new single (and video, I believe!) to be launched in the not too distant future - and in the meantime, you may well have heard clips of a collaboration with Eric Vasquez entitled Meteor on ABC Family's new show, Twisted. If you are an intrepid google addict, you may well have also found a soundcloud page with this on and discovered that after all the dark Simon, full of recrimination & regret on RA, comes a much more buoyant chappy who is ready to let his inner jolly shine forth. And what a way to let it happen - Meteor has a very de-rigour sound to it with pulsating bits, ravey breakdowns, punctuated synths emphasising the chorus and a soaring euphoric vibe that propels the tune forward in a giddy, enticing way. At times it seems like a heady mixture of Katy Perry with Simon taking more of Nicki MAN-aj approach to the tune when he sings (for the first time at approx 1m, "burning up the sky like a meteor" to a gloriously bonker glomwobble instrumental). Elsewhere there's rapid fire lyrics delivered with an exuberant joy that's all too hard to resist - and you're swept effortlessly into a world where Simon wants you to grab every opportunity, be all that you can be and make a positive impact with your life. It fits brilliantly alongside such nu-pop classics like Fireworks and Starships; and it's certainly a refreshing blast of exhilarating, optimism fuelled pop from the young fella. Whether this type of sound continues with his forthcoming album or not is almost irrelevant - Meteor exists perfectly as a one off song designed to enthrall, titillate, entertain & motivate. Genuinely tremendous stuff.
