There are probably only 3 reasons I love Hallowe'en and none of them are to do with dressing up & banging on strangers doors for half a packet of malteasers. Neither has it to do with the fact that second only to gay pride it's an excuse for the gay doms to take their ballgagged gimps for a walk through the village like they are a pet poodle (although they certainly dribble like one). Nope, it's more to do with...
- 01 ~ Event TV! In more recent years Hallowe'en has become a breeding ground for creepy television. Oh sure, we always had Buffy but now it serves as the launch for spooky/gorey series like American Horror Story & The Walking Dead. And you're pretty much guaranteed a Pretty Little Liars special. With Ezra in a gas mask! But this year? Toy Story of Terror :) *SCREAM*
- 02 ~ Shameless tween pop! Yes, it means that without fear of recrimination I can play All*Stars Things That Go Bump In The Night as much as I want to. Man, that was one dandy pop song :)
- 03 ~ Christmas! Most importantly, I can legitimately start watching a Christmas movie and no one bats an eyelid. And of course The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of the finest there is - including the flawless spooktacular song This Is Hallowe'en...
Now I can add playing
Kim Smith's Zombiez song to that list and sure as eggs are eggs, spinning this every October is going to become a global tradition. Taken from his VERY GOOD INDEED debut album Nova (which I handily reviewed
here), I originally wrote
"Zombiez could easily be his next club-thumping single - not only does it have a clever hook to it, the alluring beats and monotone verses work incredibly well almost compelling you onto the dancefloor. There absolutely has to be a brilliant dance routine to this song that will be the key focus to an off-kilter video. It could be the sexiness that zombies need to make them as raucuously filthy as those True Blood vampires :P". I was right about it being a single and to jhuhz it up even more we've got
Ricardo Autobahn remixing it up, twiddling Kim's (musical) knobs for all they are worth - and it's a blinder of a result. What this man doesn't know about a shimmering groove and a percolating beat ain't worth knowing. Like Harry Potter he has magic fingers - everything about the song is gloriously amplified & celebrated, without losing any of the original charm. The official title of the remix is "Ricardo Autobahn'z Night of the Living Dead Remix" (loving the apostrophe Z) and Kim sounds just seductively magnificent amidst the swirling, hypnotic beeps and bleeps. He conjures to life the vivid, clever lyrics (well done Crush Boys & Charlie Mason - always my go to guys for a solid sound) & spins those metaphors of rhythmic dancing in a club snapping you out of a funk & luring you into a new mesmerising state with meticulous spellbinding ease. It's all jolly magnificent and a study in how electro-pop can still have personality, wit and flair - it doesn't have to have the life beaten out of it with another layer of synth drums. So get your monster mash on with this aces ditty this Hallowe'en & let Kim Smith (the best Kim since Wilde and Sims) wow you with this song that Sharon Needles would kill for. Genius.
(You want more genius?! Check out the stunning 50s inspired horror schlock clip above. It's incredibly well done and a spooky hoot from start to finish. My favourite cliche? When the housewife falls over and instead of getting back up, just lies there panting with an "ow, my ankle/laddered tights" look on her face. Meanwhile, of course the zombie(z) get ever closer so off she runs again, stopping only to hug her old friend Mr Lampost. The slut. Brilliant!)
(PS, apropos of nothing, one of the Crush Boys - Daniel Volpe (whose music I am still impatiently waiting for) - has popped a very lovely picture on his facebook. Dreamy sigh)
