Jef Joslin - Paloma Rose
Download Jef's album Come Out West here
Jef Joslin is a singer, songwriter and producer based out of the sunny state of California. He's worked with the likes of Michael Willett (MTV's Faking It) and can often be seen teaching us all how to dress appropriately for the West Coast weather. I shall take particular note of this when I sojourn to LA at the beginning of December! Putting me in the mood for this holiday is his current single Paloma Rose from his rather marvelous indeed album Come Out West. While the talented chappy clearly has an affinity for helping other singers and performers with top notch material, he sounds absolutely in his element when performing his own material - and Paloma Rose is a gem of a pop song. There's an evocative timeless nature to the song that eschews trends and gimmicks, focusing on a solid crafting of endearing lyrics and enduring melody that swathe Jef's engaging vocal style. Alongside a seductive bass and delicious keyboard riffs, a gloriously textured backing vocal drifts in like a summer breeze rolling off the gentle Pacific coast waves. It's musical alchemy at it's very finest as in that every moment conjures up images of shimmering sunsets, fairground piers and, uh, the cast of original 90210 doing one of their summer specials. Jef's laid back approach to the song does not in anyway suggest a lack of emotive passion or commitment to the narrative, he's just deliciously easy with it (easy like Sunday morning) which of course has it's own inveigling charm. Allow the music to wash over you and infuse you with it's mellifluous beguiling nature, and you're rewarded with a song that feels like it will indelibly soundtrack every magnificent summer moment and bring you those sunny mood endorphins through the oncoming winter months year after year after year. Oh and do check out the parent album Come Out West because it's as effortlessly likeable and rewarding as the single that is taken from it. Play loud and often alongside Beach Boys, Mamas and Papas and that Katy Perry song. You'll be glad you did.
