As smooth and swift as gliding across that Strictly Come Dancing ballroom, Peter Andre has put together an album of elegant swing classics on his new album Come Fly With Me. Like his performances on Strictly the music is somethings fun, sometimes cheeky and sometimes mesmerising - and always sung with a reverence to the source material. I'm always fascinated by covers albums - I think music snobs often turn their noses up at them, ignoring the skill, craft and ingenuity it takes to create vibrant new musical scores for the beloved songs, to draw from within a vocal delivery that imprints the singer's own experiences and emotions into the oft-worn lyrics. When it's done well, as is here, it's both a triumph and a revelation. However, I'm equally fascinated by the insertion of original songs on an album of cover versions - I truly believe it often takes even more dexterity and innovation to write a song that sits seamlessly alongside these indelible standards. It's a daunting task for any composer and performer - there must be a balance of old and new without feeling derivative. Wisely Peter roped in his old touring pals The Overtones who, for five years now, have evidenced time and again that they are masters of this domain. The 5 chaps, along with Dan McDougall, have written a sprightly and charming track for Peter entitled Little Miss Notting Hill - and it's an absolute bobby dazzler of a song. Surely inspired by the film of (almost) the same night, Peter sings of a mysterious girl (see what I did there?!) that he creates a whole fantasy around - and it's all super relatable because who hasn't seen a lass on the train or a handsome fella in Starbucks and, in 30 seconds, imagined your whole life with them? There's a playful yearning in Peter's vocals as he guides and commands that deliriously playful and addictive melody around the finger clicking score. He's backed by some glorious saxophones, seductive bass and enough hammond organ to take you (metaphorically) to church - in fact the whole song has you raising your hands to the heavens in celestial testimony of it's reflective glory. Them Overtones lads sure do know how to crank out a hit - and Peter surely does sing the heck out of it. Kudos must also go to those backing vocalists who really do accentuate the old school rat pack Vegas glamour of the music. Should definitely be a single to promote the album, a must have for any Peter fan and of course essential for all the lovely #Toners out there :D
(Thanks TallKatKay for the heads up on this thoroughly enjoyable gem :D)
