The Vamps have gone dance - and I love it. That's not strictly true, but on their latest track, Cheater, they've managed to fuse together influences from a number of genres (straight up pop, rock and 80s synth vibrations) that all collide in one exhilarating song which leaves you breathless and gasping for more more more. It's an effect that, when combined with the "f**k yeah" nature of the lyrics, practically compels your body to leave it's seat, get your ass onto to the floor and pull some fist pumping shapes with giddy abandon. Cheater (co-written by always excellent hitmaker Ed Drewett along with those fine RedTrianglePro chaps) is a song that feels like it could be performed in a number of different styles but simply sparkles in the effusive setting it's given. Their buoyant singing about a lass who is dating a bit of an all round philandering cad meshes well with the electrifying guitar and insistent synths. I love how their vocals are able to convey a number of emotions - on the one hand there is a hint of vulnerability because it's a girl they clearly care for, but there's also an understandable glee to the discovery that this golden boy is actually an out and out bounder (personally I'm all for Uncle Buck's approach to these blokes who can't keep their trousers zipped)! All this is underscored by a magnificently rhythmic percussion that keeps the song galloping forward and adds to the endorphin rush you get just by basking in the music's reflective glory. Throw in that incessantly catchy chorus and feel-good bed bouncing video and it's an absolute winner that bodes well for their new album later this year. And ergo a rollicking good time was had by all.
