Jake - Playing With Fire

Whether it be through his solo singles, collaborations with other artists (such as the ace Bruno Alexander) or writing hits for upcoming boy bands (Random), I've been thoroughly enjoying the creative endeavors of singer-songwriter-producer Jake (@therecordmaka) for a while now. For me, part of the appeal isn't just the ferocious beats and indelible melodies - it's also that he seems to really understand how to construct a song and then make sure it's delivered in a way that is deferential to the demands of the lyrical emotions in play. Take his new single, Playing With Fire (which you should clearly run - not walk - to iTunes to purchase). He's concocted a sweet dance-pop gem that's resonant with intoxicating r'n'b influences. It's set to a propulsive groove, shimmering synth sounds and sensuous sax riffs that weave in and out like the tantalising touch of a lover's hand. Jake sings of a woman who has been caught out in her relationship games and now is living with the consequences (which gives us that singalong hook of "if you play with fire, baby, you get burned"). I like that Jake sings with the intensity of a man searching for reason in a messed up situation rather than the fired up scorn of one seeking revenge. It makes the song all the more relatable - and it helps that Jake's vocal guides you through the engaging melody of the song with a mellifluous ease. It all coalesces to make one addictive and sophisticated jam - the type that deserves to be and belongs on the radio. Add to this a simple, but effective video and it is an overall supremely satisfying package.
