Pop is an ever evolving creature that never fails to delight and stimulate. While it's roots should be in indelible hooks, soaring melodies and meaningful lyrics, it doesn't always have to be a sunshine day. There's always the bitter with the sweet, some candy coated chaos to give you intrigue and fascination. One artist that has been able to grow and evolve alongside the changing face of music is badw0lfy, most recently seen as part of the glorious Wrathschild project. While we are left pondering the fate of the intergalactic royal duo, badw0lfy has premiered her latest solo music and it is everything. Used 2 This is an exquisite composition that is built around an icy cool synth riff, juxtaposed with beats and rhythms so hot they are as essential as the life force of the sun. The sounds collide with orgasmic ecstasy to fuse together a pulsating groove that mesmerises from the first note to the last breathe - badw0lfy is a woman who clearly knows how to make pop, and make it intriguing. The shuddering keyboards send shivers down your spine and compel your body to surrender to the unihibited dance goddess that resides within us all. The lyrics are part spoken, part sung and it's another fascinating melding of genres (hip-pop?) that bring the themes of the song into vivid focus. I love it when the music is as essential to the narrative as the words and that is absolutely the case here. Used 2 This is about exploring your own limitations, finding out how you can grow as a person and not being afraid of what other people think. It's a message we could all do with embracing, regardless of what stage of your life you are at. The melody that badw0lfy so effortlessly commands in the chorus is like manna from heaven, with a percolating percussion and complementary backing vocals that represent the shivers of joy the listener feels at being part of this experience. It's expertly written (those "get-get-get-get used 2 this, used 2 this" repetitions are the type of chart gold Kylie would kill for), beautifully produced and performed with an engaging verve that's hard to resist. Take the video (see link above) - it's wonderfully shot and has the kind of joy de vivre and gay abandon that the song promotes. With more singles and an album to follow, if this is the career path chosen by badw0lfy then I could certainly get used 2 this. More please, oh god so much more please...
