Peter Wilson's newest album "Utopia" (the latest in a long line of joyful and satisfying releases) really is the gift that keeps on giving. It is a vibrant collection of songs that are drenched in the most enduring of pop influences - that of the choruses of Motown, the lush orchestrations of Abba and the endless refrains of Stock Aitken and Waterman. In looking back, Peter has - and continues to - crafted something that is instantly familiar, yet takes you on new adventures; eschewing current fads and trends yet always finding a way to give his music a contemporary sheen that means it sounds fresh and exciting. His latest single, The Game of Love, is the perfect example of this. It's a song that covers subject matter we may all be familiar with - love often comes with neurosis and complications, painful revelations and devastations; and, try as you might to resist it, you are a slave to the rhythm it brings into your life (particularly if someone new can help you ease the heartache). Peter is in his element, singing with his resonant tones to a throbbing bass line and cantering synth riffs. This is interspersed with thrilling electro-flourishes and elegiac piano moments that accentuate the emotions in the narrative just at the right time. It is a percolating tale that grips the listener from the first beat and doesn't let you go until the last note - in that way, you are just as much a prisoner to the game of love as Peter is himself. If this is 50 shades of Wilson then my safe word is MORE PLEASE... (and more is coming. The single is released in early May and I'll be back with thoughts on the remixes that accompany it. Two words to make you squeal - MATT POP)!
