Matt Johnson - Get Over You

It doesn't take Shakespeare's way with words to let you know that the new single from Matt Johnson is the perfect vehicle to showcase his beautifully soulful and expressive (one true) voice. Get Over You is an exquisitely constructed song that feels like the singer immersed himself in timeless classics and learned that heartfelt, universal lyrics and memorable melody will endure long beyond whatever passing fad is currently clogging up the singles chart. Rick Ashley debuting at number one with his latest album shows there is quite the appetite for quality pop; Matt performs this song with such tender aching that the sentiments are practically palpable. At it's core, Get Over You is the deconstruction of emotions that accompany a break up. There is melancholy and pathos both in Matt's nuanced voice and the languorous score. The piano driven instrumental is really allowed to breathe, giving the listener time to invest in the narrative (giving much more of a lasting impact at the personal devastation sung of). I'd say there are no winners in this song but there is that glimmer of hope, of human endurance that is evident from the title - and manifest in each swell of music, each soaring chorus. It is anguished and sad, yet in that sadness comes beauty through intimate expression. Just stunning.
