Brendan Velasquez - Disappearing

There is something so intimate and personal about Disappearing - the new single from the lovely Brendan Velasquez. The writers of the song (the always talented Daniel Volpe, Thomas Lipp and Charlie Mason) have done an excellent job of making it feel like a page from a diary, a personal reflection that is so moving and poignant that it feels like they've reached in and taken the very words from that still, small voice inside of you. Such honest and open introspection could not and would not be successful without a beautifully delivered vocal that embodies every emotion and sentiment that the narrative provides. Brendan is a man who is more than up to the task and infuses the words with the wisdom of his own experience. It's this vocal that is an equal partner with lyrics and music in bringing the song to life - he's bruised and vulnerable in parts of the song, yet at other times he is empowered by the resolve of his decision (indeed, rightly or wrongly making that decision can be freeing in terms of leaving the internal turmoil behind). He's accompanied by a lush, textured wall of sound that is powered by shimmering synths, compelling percussion and a groove so insistent that you'll be lost in the music (caught in a trap) in no time at all. Despite the oft-melancholy nature of the song, it all coalesces to feel quite optimistic - as if putting the best spin possible on the situation will thrust you into a better tomorrow. It's a lovely composition where the production values and Brendan's singing really enhance the overall result - probably the most lovely 80s inspired synth-infused jam I've heard since Girls Aloud's The Loving Kind or BWO's Signed On My Tattoo. So do yourself a favour - leave your Pokemon Go at the door and spend some time immersed in this sparkling, thought provoking tune. With a world as crazy and mixed up as ours currently is, it is sweet, blissful release. Gorgeous.
