There is no denying that The Feeling front man, Dan Gillespie-Sells, knows how to craft a catchy pop tune. Chart topping albums, hit singles and a plethora of sell out tours have firmly ensconced songs such as Fill My Little World, Join With Us, A Hundred Sinners, Boy Cried Wolf, Alien et al in the public psyche; songs that are intimately connected to your own memories, experiences and emotions. Transferring these writing skills to the world of theatrical musicals requires an understanding of keeping these emotive lyrics and memorable choruses whilst furthering the story and emotional growth connected to a whole new world of characters that inhabit the narrative. It's a tricky balancing act but one that Dan seems to have handled beautifully based on the first song released from his upcoming musical, Everybody's Talking About Jamie. The musical is about 16 year-old Sheffield boy Jamie who doesn't fit in at school and is trying to find his feet after his Dad's left home. The first song, Don't Even Know It, is the perfect introduction to Jamie. It is the type of rousing anthem that will have you cheering along with lyrics that encourage Jamie (and the listener) to recognise their potential, embrace their path in life and let their inner goddess explode into the world. Anyone who has ever felt a bit lost or outside the realms of perceived society norms will recognise themselves in these euphoric lyrics that as much an ebullient call to arms for self-esteem as they are instant sing-a-long classics. Dan sings with unfettered enthusiasm, at times the wise buddy dishing out advice then using said advice to empower himself. His gleeful vibrant tones are entirely contagious and give the song a giddy feel that will have you raising your hands to the sky in emphatic testimony. In perfect partnership with his voice is the joyous instrumental that is powered by a rollicking piano, radiant horns and a galloping percussion. It makes the song an exhilarating relationship between voice, words and instruments that sends a giant endorphin rush to your brain by the time it has finished. Feel good factor guaranteed. Bring on the musical - see you there on 25th Feb!
