I must admit, I fell hard for The Genuine Fakes when they covered Frozen's Do You Want To Build A Snowman (at a time when every other person in the world was wailing along to Let It Go). Their effusive brand of indie rock meets pop is entirely contagious, a gloriously layered wall of sound that seeks to elevate and edify the listener. They are previewing their next album with this tribute to the world's greatest rock band - Guns N Roses Saved My Life. It's a tale we should all be familiar with - that earth shattering moment when you discover a band for the first time and feel like every single note, every word sung has been individually crafted just for your ears. It is the story of how that music stays with you, inspires you and becomes the soundtrack to every life experience. For the 7 year old who became the lead singer of The Genuine Fakes, that band was (obviously) Guns N Roses - and he now is part of a group who other people will be singing similar songs about in years to come. The lyrics are wittily constructed but always stay on the right side of earnest. It is sung with a giddy enthusiasm that is all too addictive meaning that while you are rocking out to this song you are also hankering to get that sweet air guitar solo going to Patience. The instrumental accompanying said lyrics and ebullient singing accentuates the mission statement of the track - to evoke the influence of G'n'R whilst staying true to The Genuine Fakes own effusive power-pop sound. You don't need to use your illusion to appreciate the blistering guitar solos that open and permeate the track, whilst vibrant percussion propels the song forward at a peppy pace. The chorus is instant ear-worm, meaning you are singing along before the song has finished it's first play - and by the time it has finished you want to hit repeat and experience the wonder all over again; plus textured harmonies are the icing on this very delicious leather jacket wearing, devil horns fingers displaying cake. Take me down to the paradise city because this is a blast from start to finish. Now ain't it fun when that happens?!
