I've long been a fan of genre-hopping, pop-rock god Tommy Fredvang (now just known as Fredvang). Whether it be his insightful covers of other people's songs or the dynamic creations of his own making, his voice powers each song he performs to exhilarating new places, leaving the listener breathless and ready for more. He's launching into 2017 with exuberant gusto on his compelling new single, Gasoline. The title hints at the explosive sounds contained within, whilst cover art enhances the music with an intoxicating juxtaposition of foreboding darkness and fiery light. It all sets high expectations for the music and Fredvang does not disappoint. In just three minutes, the narrative takes you on a thrilling journey that is both intimate and expansive. It's intimate because it is a tale of finding that someone who truly completes you - the type of person who helps you let down your defences and be the best version of you that you know how to be. Fredvang sings it with a tangible yearning that is propelled by a sense of anticipation and excitement. The music matches this crescendo - it starts off as personal as the lyrics; a subdued synth riff that is subtly layered with electro-effects and a pulsing bass. At the one minute mark it is like a rollercoaster reaching the top of the first steep incline and transforms into something completely different. That metaphor works well for the song because Fredvang makes it feel like an expansive adventure - that love is something that should be embraced. The music explodes in a cascade of convivial chants, percolating beats and mesmerising keyboard chords that elevate this to the fist pump to the sky type anthem it longs and deserves to be. Beautifully written, expertly constructed and brilliantly performed - this is just the song you need to brush off those winter blues and start the new year with something hopeful and optimistic. I salute you Fredvang - and look forward to your future endeavours.
