Charlie Healy - Playground

I always think that being a contestant on the live shows of The X Factor is a double edged sword. On the one hand you have access to a massive audience, ready and primed to buy your music and launch your career to stratospheric heights. On the other hand, it is becoming increasingly hard to grasp that success if you are not a top three act - instead, thrust into a crowded X factor alumni market where the barriers to pop success become much harder. I truly admire those that persist - it takes determination and innovation to turn negative perceptions into positive acclaim. Some turn to theatre (Cassie Compton, Ash Emerson, Lucie Jones all doing nicely) while others reinvent their pop careers and build on their devoted following. Sean Smith is one such lad who has accomplished this, and it was his recommendation of Charlie Healy that led me to check ojt his new single, Playground. You may well remember Charlie from r'n'b infused act The Risk - his solo music is a natural evolution of that sound and makes for compelling, satisfying listening. He sounds positively joyous on this song about seduction, desire and carefree abandon. Alluring metaphors abound, Charlie imbuing each nuanced word with lip biting passion - thus ensuring the song is utterly intoxicating. When he sings "I'm in my element" it works brilliantly for the narrative, yet seems to convey how he feels about taking control of his solo career. His engaging voice is surrounded by a shimmering disco inspired groove, wonderfully textured with swirling synths and a percussive rhythm that makes you want to raise your hands to the sky in euphoric delight. Charlie has constructed a tune that favours unforgettable refrain, glorious melody and impassioned vocals. It is timeless and timely, meaning that this will be one for the ages. Aces.
