There is something about talented singer-songwriter, Boy Epic, that always grabs my attention. It isn't just the music (though that is why we're here and much more on that in a moment). It is a whole aura that seems to surround him - the intensity of his look that links to the fiery nature of his lyrical compositions; the dynamic complexity of his image that accentuates the brooding words he sings so well. On his compelling new single, Trust, he takes a simplistic, classic style and injects it with an element of passion, longing and a frisson of electrifying danger that comes with the unknown. The contrast of his white shirt, collar open and sleeves rolled up, against the black braces/suspenders sends an intoxicating message of allure and breathless anticipation - an image of person who will go to the ends of the earth to pursue his desires. It is the leap into the unknown to pursue this world that creates the exhilarating excitement and elements of palpable risk that are so gloriously and enticingly embedded into the music. Boy Epic leafs through the lexicon of language as he chooses metaphors and descriptive words with exquisite precision, not so much singing them but putting every ounce of his heart and soul into a nuanced performance. It is part of what makes this song a living, breathing work of art. His voice unveils a melody that permeates your cerebral cortex and lingers long after the song is finished. It is swathed in a powerful, industrial-gothic wall of sound that is infused with bold percussion, fuzzed up electro-effects and a rhythmic groove that reaches out and grabs you from the first beat. All this comes together to make a riveting piece of music that enthrals, beguiles and seduces. It is Boy Epic's world - we just take the hand that reaches out from the shadows and step into his adventure.
