Yann - Futuro Ex

It has been a criminally long time since I wrote about inspiring pop singer-songwriter, Yann. That is not to say that I haven't been avidly following his career and delighting into the artistic and musical evolution he has been accomplishing with each successive endeavour. His latest single, Futuro Ex, represents the pinnacle of his journey to date. The track (alongside the stunning accompanying visual) brings together his clear love for movies and his clear love for music in breathtaking fashion. It is an emotive, electrifying composition where the music is as much a part of the narrative as the lyrics, the complexity of the story evident in every note, beat and groove. Lyrically, it is a story about that moment when you realise the person you are with isn't planning to be part of your future and how that realisation invokes a desperate need to get them to stay. While there is a sense of poignancy and yearning to Yann's melodic vocals, there is also that feeling of urgency that happens when all consuming love takes over your every thought. This intensity is also represented through the bold percussion, addictive finger clicks, mesmerising textured sounds and then, that phenomenal crescendo into an intoxicating synth riff that has to be experienced to be believed. Through all this, Yann commands the melody and intimate sentiment of the song whilst weaving seamlessly with the swirling music that surrounds him. He has also conjured up a video that is beautifully shot, enhancing the aura of the song with radiant imagery that highlights the thin line between love, lust, pent-up emotions and assertive release. This is what art feels and looks like - a mirror into our own souls and experiences, reflected through the creative vision of one who strives for perfection. Magnificent.
