I'm about ready for Why Don't We to break through in the UK - we need a new boy band dominating our charts and I'm all for a song as enticing as their collaboration with Macklemore, I Don't Belong In This Club, racing to the top of the Brit-pop charts. Plus if In Real Life breakthrough at the same time with their salacious jam, Crazy AF, we can all enjoy one of those boy band rivalries that aren't really happening but certainly sell records (see Take That vs East 17, Backstreet Boys vs N*Sync, One Direction vs The Wanted et al). And I Don't Belong In This Club certainly deserves to sell by the bucketload. It is a wry observation of all those nights you've ever gone out but aren't really in the mood (hashtag FOMO) so all the things that usually get your blood pumping with adrenaline (you favourite song being played twice in one night!) suddenly same staid and dull. The lyrics are a cavalcade of descriptions that will have you nodding along emphatically, whilst that sparse yet insistent piano riff will get your hips swaying, your fingers clicking and toes a-tapping before you know what is happening to you. Truth is, once the rhythmic groove of the chorus hits you, you will be dancing along whether you belong in the club or not - it is a brilliantly clever musical score which gets under your skin and has you yearning for more. The lads perform the song perfectly - there is a world weary resignation and a dash of humour in their vocal delivery in the verses, a cathartic sense of release in the chorus as the proclaim the titular refrain with immeasurable pride (and gloriously textured vocals). It becomes a rallying call to arms, aided by Mackelmore's searing rap in the second verse which seems to elevate the second run through of the chorus. It is pointless to resist the charms of the song and the allure of the hook after this point because it is all consuming and decadently delicious (particularly the insertion of muted horns in the middle eight). Utterly phenomenal. Oh, and the video (here, on YouTube)? An absolute hoot - the type of personality us Brits love to see in our pop stars...
